How to Restore Colors to Pictures Using CS3

Adobe Photoshop is one of the leading photo-editing software programs available. With Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite 3, or CS3, it is possible to restore colors, make touch-ups and do much more. This is necessary if the photo's light and color levels are not balanced or full. Bring out all of the colors and make your photographs more alive by using Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Load the photo. Go to "File" and select "Open." Browse for the photo that you want to edit. Go to "Edit" and select "Paste" if you have an image copied from another source.

Go to the "Image" tab. This is located on the top toolbar and has an extensive list of color restoring options. Click "Adjustments"--this is where you will do most of the color restoration.

Restore the colors manually using levels. Click the "Levels" option located in "Adjustments." Click and hold onto the right, left and center markers under "Input Levels" and "Output Levels." This will lighten and darken the colors depending on how far you slide the markers.

Restore the colors manually using color balance. Select "Color Balance" under "Adjustments." Slide the marker towards a specific color to enhance it. Colors include red, green, blue, cyan, magenta and yellow. Move the slider to the colors that are most prominent in the picture. For example, for an image of a forest, you would want to enhance the greens.

Restore the colors automatically. Click "Auto Levels" under "Adjustments" to automatically set the color levels. Click "Auto Contrast" to set the contrast and "Auto Color" to balance the colors automatically. This option is easier but gives you less color control.

Use the "Healing Brush Tool." This is located on the left-hand toolbar, indicated by a band-aid icon. Choose the "Spot Healing" tool to cover up blemishes and the "Red Eye" tool to remove red eye from photos.

Repeat this step for multiple articles to take pictures of multiple articles at once. Adhering the articles to the mat board will cause them to lie flat during the photographic process and there will be no movement of the article during the photographing process.

Set up your camera on a copy stand. A copy stand can be found for a temporary use at most university or community art classes or workshops. Most professional photography and art supply stores will also carry a copy stand if you wish to purchase one. You can also create your own copy stand. A flat piece of wood or heavy plastic serves as the base where the article will rest, and then the camera is placed on a holder directly above the base and a light with adjustable arms is attached to either side of the base.

How to Make the Background of My Photo Blur

Blurring your photo's background can be an artistic preference that follows the concept of "bokeh." This refers to a blur's aesthetic use in a photo. The process of blurring a photo being shot creates a distinction between the elements in focus and out of focus. This difference is generally acquired based on the distance of the object from the camera and the focal length of the lens used in shooting.

Use the camera's zoom or a separate telephoto lens for your camera. If you are using a consumer-type camera, use its "zoom in" option to enable you to achieve the look of a focused subject and a blurred background. If you are using a DSLR camera, you may also use the packaged zoom lens, but if you have access to a longer lens, using this is generally better. A longer lens is also called a telephoto lens. The longer the lens, the more blur you can achieve in your photo's background. You can actually start with a 50mm lens, which is a medium lens. However, this doesn't have that much distinctive blur yet, compared to a long lens like a 100mm, or better yet, a 500mm lens, which provides a much deeper out-of-focus look to your photo's background.

Configure your camera to have a larger aperture setting. The aperture is the hole the camera uses to allow light to pass through the camera lens and create the image. The larger this hole or opening, the shorter the depth of field. This makes your photo's background more blurred. However, this camera or lens configuration is often available in professional cameras only. Most consumer-type cameras only have automatic settings and there is no way to control the aperture setting.

Blurring your photo's background can be an artistic preference that follows the concept of "bokeh." This refers to a blur's aesthetic use in a photo. The process of blurring a photo being shot creates a distinction between the elements in focus and out of focus. This difference is generally acquired based on the distance of the object from the camera and the focal length of the lens used in shooting.

Use the camera's zoom or a separate telephoto lens for your camera. If you are using a consumer-type camera, use its "zoom in" option to enable you to achieve the look of a focused subject and a blurred background. If you are using a DSLR camera, you may also use the packaged zoom lens, but if you have access to a longer lens, using this is generally better. A longer lens is also called a telephoto lens. The longer the lens, the more blur you can achieve in your photo's background. You can actually start with a 50mm lens, which is a medium lens. However, this doesn't have that much distinctive blur yet, compared to a long lens like a 100mm, or better yet, a 500mm lens, which provides a much deeper out-of-focus look to your photo's background.

Configure your camera to have a larger aperture setting. The aperture is the hole the camera uses to allow light to pass through the camera lens and create the image. The larger this hole or opening, the shorter the depth of field. This makes your photo's background more blurred. However, this camera or lens configuration is often available in professional cameras only. Most consumer-type cameras only have automatic settings and there is no way to control the aperture setting.
