Whether you are studying photography or simply a keen amateur photographer, choosing the perfect theme for your pictures is the key to any successful photo shoot. Preparation is essential whether you're planning to do portraiture, landscape or music photography. The quality of your resulting photographs will greatly benefit from a little extra planning and forethought.

Even within the portrait photography genre the possibilities are seemingly endless, so you can afford to be a little creative. When photographing portrait subjects in a studio, clever use of lighting is key to achieving a professional effect. Experiment by trying out different lighting techniques. When aiming for a high-fashion or editorial look, ask your model to pose using strong body shapes. Browsing glossy fashion magazines can help to give you ideas and inspiration.

Capturing the perfect shot at a show or concert can make for a striking image. Unknown elements such as smoke machines and strobe lighting can make music photography a little challenging. However, the unusual lighting at live music venues can also result in some interesting effects. When capturing moving subjects it is also essential that you chose the perfect moment to take your shot. Take your time and the resulting image will be all the more powerful.

Nature photography is a beloved theme among professional and amateur photographers alike. Capturing the essence of a perfect spring morning can be intensely satisfying. When photographing landscapes, the best light will be found in the early morning. Experiment with filters to create tone, definition and add intensity to a moody seascape. When photographing animals, a strong zoom lens is often required in order to achieve the perfect detailed closeup.

Take your camera into your local bustling town or city and you will find countless vibrant subjects simply waiting to be captured. Street entertainers such as jugglers, musicians and mimes will make for some great action shots that are full of energy. Head to a busy marketplace and try to capture the colorful sights and sounds of the vendors and their produce.

A good portrait shows more than merely what someone looks like--it captures an expression, reveals a mood, or tells something about a person. A professional photographer knows how to capture this when shooting a portrait.

A portrait is a likeness of a person, usually of the person's face. A good portrait will be more than just a picture of a person, it should tell the viewer something about the subject.

Most of the time, portrait photographers own businesses, meaning their responsibilities include more than just taking pictures. Duties include scheduling appointments, purchasing supplies and equipment, dealing with bills and records, and hiring, training, and directing employees.

Portrait photographers can specialize in school photographs, weddings, and religious ceremonies. Some photographers look for subjects and take informal portraits, while others set up formal portraits in photography studios.

According to Indeed.com, the average yearly salary of a portrait photographer is $21,000, as of December 2009.

Tips for capturing a good portrait include putting your subject at ease, using good lighting, and having control of the situation. If photographers plan to sell a portrait, they must have the subject sign a release form. Sample releases can be found at the American Society of Media Photographers' website.

Studio Background Tips

One of the joys of being a professional photographer is that you can control the look and feel of your images simply by setting up your own studio. Having a studio also allows you to continue working despite what the weather may be like. The equipment you use in your studio will vary slightly depending on the type of photography you choose. Most new photographers want to set up a portrait photography studio, and one of the first questions they have is what to use for the backgrounds.

Fabric is an easy and often inexpensive background to use because there are so many colors, textures and designs to choose from. Many new photographers start by hanging a solid-colored sheet against a wall for the photo background and take their first shots of friends and family.

While flat bed sheets can make workable fabric photo backgrounds, most photo studios use muslin, satin or velvet. Muslin is a very thick fabric that can be easily dyed for making your own custom backgrounds. Velvet is rich and luxurious, and doesn't let light through well so the photo backgrounds are uniform in color and look quite sophisticated and formal. Satin is smooth and silky, plus it softens light that is shone through it, making it an excellent background fabric for creating soft, dreamy or romantic photos.

When using fabric for photo backgrounds, avoid loud or busy patterns because they will detract from the subject of your photo.

Paper is another common substance used for photography backgrounds. It's popular because you can purchase large rolls inexpensively, get uniform color in all photos and don't have to clean the background material. Instead you simply tear off a sheet that's dusty or worn and throw it away. Large rolls of photography background paper are also seamless, so you don't have distracting lines appearing in the photos.

Photography background papers are generally bought in large rolls eight to 12 feet wide, and are mounted on background stands that can be moved and adjusted as needed. The paper is rolled out about 12 to 15 feet so that it creates the standing or sitting area as well as the background. This practice makes it easier to create full-body photos while having a single-color background.

Some photographers prefer to use scenic backgrounds in their photo studios. These can be purchased from specialty photography shops or you can make your own.

The most common type of scenic photo background available in specialty stores is simply a photo or painting transferred onto muslin fabric. Self-made scenic backgrounds are often just large poster-sized prints of a scenic photo you've taken yourself.

Like fabric backgrounds, however, detailed or busy scenic backgrounds can take attention away from the primary subject of your photos.

Larger photo studios often create staged scenes to use as photography backgrounds. This allows portraits to appear as if the person is in an actual location instead of a photo studio. Elaborate stage sets can be purchased in specialty stores. They range from English Garden settings to 19th-century towns. Smaller stage settings might include a park bench or a horse corral fence.

What to Use as a Background for a Glamour Shot

Glamour shots are portraits designed to make the subject look luminous and dramatic. Although glamour shots focus on the subject's face, the background can make a difference in setting the photo's tone. As you choose background options, look for scenes that will support the atmosphere of the photo without taking attention from the person.

To enhance the luxurious feeling of a glamour shot, use textured material for a backdrop. Choose fabric with a rich texture like thick velvet or brocade. The material will reflect the light to create a glow and visual interest in the background without overpowering the subject. Have the model dress in a color that contrasts with the background so she does not appear to have a floating head.

If you want a stylized, dramatic feeling in your glamour photo, look for locations that have bold architectural details. Brick walls, libraries with light and steel details or windowed buildings all have strong lines that add a touch of interest to a photo. Shoot the subject so the lines radiate out from his body. Ensure the background is out of focus so it does not become the central feature of the photograph.

Use nature to create an unexpected contrast between the subject and background. Dress your model in a formal outfit and style her with high-fashion makeup and hair. Place her outdoors. Depending on your available locations, you might shoot the model against a grassy lawn, in a forest of autumn leaves or among evergreens. To add a touch of drama, place the model on an ornate piece of furniture in a field or forest.

If you want the subject to be the center of a photo, use a white background with a light gradient. Use gels to create a simple color and position the light so the brightest part of the gradient is directly behind the model; do so by positioning spotlights above or below the model, pointing at the background. The effect will present the appearance that light is emanating from the model's body.
