What Is Needed for a Portable Portrait Studio?

A portable portrait studio is a photographic lighting setup that is used for portraiture and can be easily transported from location to location. You will need to purchase a few items or modify your own to create a portable portrait studio.

The primary element that goes into portraiture besides your camera is lighting. You will need portable lights and stands that are easy to break down and set up. Your lights and stands should be lightweight and easy to carry. You may want to invest in a carrying bag for your lighting setup.

If you want your portrait studio to be truly portable, you may want to think about investing in a small generator or power source for on-location shooting. If you are taking portraits outside, chances are you will not have a power outlet so it is a good idea to be prepared.

Eliminating harsh shadows on facial features is key in portraiture photography. You will want to pick up some collapsible reflectors to bounce the light exactly where you need it. Most reflectors come in white, silver and gold.

How to Set Up Photos for Sale

The most popular venue for artists selling their photos, prints or other art work is an art fair. Art fairs occur throughout the country, particularly during the summer months when outdoor fairs pop up in hundreds of communities. Of course, you can display your art work for sale online too. In order to display your photos for sale at an art fair, you'll have to do a little legwork and lay the foundation. Your photographs are the most important items in your display, but the proper materials to accent your work are critical. Advance preparation is needed for success.

Instructions

Visit the fair. Scout the location where you'll be displaying your photos. Most established fairs use the same areas, such as streets on a college campus, to hold art fairs. If possible, attend the fair the year prior to your anticipated showing. You can talk to other artists and view display booths to get ideas.

Go online. Visit the online site of the fair in which you want to participate. Aside from fees and other information, the guidelines provided will give you an idea of booth and space requirements, which is the first step in determining how you can display your photos. Some art fairs, like the one in Ann Arbor, Michigan, provide tent canopies with rented space, but others require you to provide your own tent (see References 1).

Select work. Choose the photos you'll be displaying. This is a prelude to figuring out how you'll actually display the photos. Keep in mind you may want to group photos by subject matter or other categories. Knowing how large your space or booth is will help you determine the number of photos you can display and fair rules also may stipulate a number.

Choose colors and mount photos. Mount or otherwise back your photos for display. These can be permanent mountings or temporary measures to simply provide protection for your photos when potential buyers are handling them. Consider wall coverings for your booth and color schemes for your photo matting. Coordinate the matting or mounting material with wall coverings and within photo subject groupings.

Feature photo. Decide which photo or photos you want to prominently display at the front of or outside your booth. You'll also want to, or may be required to depending on the fair, include a display with a photo and biography or yourself that is easily accessible to viewers. Remember to provide business cards.

Develop a theme. Use easels to display photos, especially larger photos or prints. The key is to develop a theme within your booth that both supports your work and also distinguishes categories, like black & white or color. A mix of wall displays, racks, easels, shelves and table-top photos can be appealing. Frame table-top or other photos as they might appear in a buyer's home.

Purchase see-through bags. Use see-through plastic bags to display prints if you're in an open space without cover. You'll want to use the same type bags to package your work when someone buys photos. You want your work to be visible as patrons walk around the fair after purchasing a photo (see References 2).

How to Use the Aperture to Control Depth of Field in Photography

Aperture size controls the amount of light that that enters the camera and performs a critical function for focus. The smaller the aperture, the background and foreground gain sharpness. The zone of sharpness is depth of field. Select an appropriate aperture setting to emphasize details in your photograph. Changing aperture affects depth of field, even when all other conditions are identical.

Instructions

Determine depth of field. A camera that has a ground glass focusing system will display objects with the same sharpness as they will appear in a finished print.

Look for bracket marks on your lens. Some lenses have depth of field scales on the side of the lens. When you focus your lens, you can look at the bracketed numbers on the lens to check what portion of the final picture will be in and out of focus.

Open the aperture to its widest setting, f/2, in order to create a shallow depth of field. Foreground and background will have a soft focus. The middle region and objects, will have a sharp focus.

Adjust aperture settings to the smallest opening, f/16. This setting radically changes the picture from a wide aperture setting. With the camera focused on the same point as with a wide opening, depth of field increases so that middle, background and foreground, sharpen in focus.
