How to Change the First Photo for an Event in iPhoto

You can download, save and easily catalog event photographs with Apple's iPhoto software. You can even select which image you want to appear first for each event. Though the manual sort option works well to organize images in the photo section, the function does not exist when you view events. That can pose a challenge when you want to change the first photo of an event in iPhoto. Changing the first photo for an event in iPhoto requires a certain procedure.

Instructions

Open iPhoto by clicking on the iPhoto icon on the Dock of an Apple Macintosh computer. The software's opening screen will appear.

Click on "Events" in the Library list in the left sidebar of the iPhoto screen. That action will show events in the software's main viewing window. Double-click on the icon of the event you want to change, and all photos from that event will appear in the main viewing window.

Click on "Edit" in the iPhoto toolbar at the top of your computer's screen. In the choices that appear, choose "Select All" to select all images from the event.

Click on "File" in the iPhoto toolbar at the top of the computer screen, and choose "New Album From Selection" in the drop-down menu that appears. Insert a name for the "New Album," and click on "Create." A book icon, with the name you inserted for the album, will appear in the left sidebar of iPhoto under Albums.

Click on the book icon of the new album you created to view the photos in the main viewing window. Reorder the photos by dragging and dropping them. That task allows you to change the event's first image. The images save automatically as reordered in the album.

Select Command + A to select all the images in the album. Click on "Photos" in the iPhoto toolbar at the top of the computer screen, and choose "Batch Change." Select "Set 'Title' to 'Text' " in the drop-down menu that appeared, and type a title, such as "Bob's Summer Vacation," in the text box. Click on the small, square box in front of the option "Append a number to each photo." A check-mark will appear. Click on "OK."

Click on "View" in the iPhoto toolbar at the top of screen. In the options that appear, select "Sort Photos," and then click on "By Title." The photographs will display as you reordered them.

Rim lighting is a technique used to give shape to objects in a photograph by backlighting the subject. When it is used in a subtle manner, rim lighting can be barely detectable. When rim lighting is used as an effect, it gives the subject a lighted halo around them and an ethereal look. Rim lighting is most often used to define shapes against a background, but it can also be used to highlight subtle effects of a photograph such as tiny hairs like those on the rim of a flower.

Instructions

Place your photographic subject in the environment in which it will be photographed. After you have chosen your background and positioned your subject, the first lighting step you should take is to add rim lighting.

Decide how much rim lighting you need in your shot. Subtle rim lighting effects are barely noticeable and serve simply to define the photographic object against the background, especially if the background and subject are both dark-colored. Heavy rim lighting effects will appear as a halo. If you adjust several lights and apply a heavy rim lighting effect around the whole perimeter of the subject, the subject will appear to have an outer glow.

Position your lights to create the desired amount of rim lighting. To create a rim lighting effect, the light must come from above the subject, and it must be directed toward the camera. For a more diffused effect, you can use a reflective surface to direct the light. If you've ever been to see a professional portrait photographer, you may have noticed some umbrella-shaped diffusers positioned around the room. These are commonly used to diffuse and even out rim lighting.

Light diffusers are used to prevent these problems by softening and spreading the light. The resulting photos are much more professional looking and pleasing to the eye. Light diffusers are very simple and inexpensive to make with materials you have around the house.

Instructions

Remove the glass and backing from a large photo frame. The frame size can be whatever you have on hand, but larger frames work best for creating large diffusers.

Lay your fabric across the frame and secure to one side with staples or clips.

Pull the fabric gently taunt and secure it to the opposite side of the frame. Repeat this step with the remaining two sides.

Place the fabric frame diffuser in front of your photography lights and take your photos.

Assemble the portable closet according to the included instructions. This gives you a frame four to six feet tall and three to four feet wide. The frame is on wheels, making it very easy to move around your photography studio.

Drape one end of your fabric around the top of the closet pole, center it and secure it into place with clothespins or clips.

Wrap one side edge of the fabric around the side closet pole and secure it.

Wrap the other side of fabric around the remaining side pole and gently pull it taunt to smooth out wrinkles.

Position the new reflector between your photography subject and lights, then proceed to take your photos.
