How to Make a Wooden Field Camera

How to Make a Wooden Field Camera

Bender makes assembling an 8- by 10-inch wooden field camera easy for new enthusiasts who enjoy using this medium, with all parts and pieces included in Bender camera kits. But the real key to accurate assembly is patience. Building your own field camera requires painstaking time and effort. The absence of one or both could prove disastrous to your final product. For this reason, it pays to have some experience in woodworking to come up with a usable camera.

Instructions

    1

Assemble all three lensboard riders and the lensboard, as instructed. Use wood glue and small, right-angle clamps in assembling the lensboard. Sand the sides and backs smooth and flush.

    2

Assemble the back holder, making sure the pieces are carefully measured and fitted precisely. Use glue to secure the two vials in place.

    3

Sand smooth and flush the four pieces of the ground-glass holder. Glue them with right-angle clamps. Glue the four glass spacers in place and cut to shape the ground-glass retainer blocks.

    4

Use C clamps to attach the two pieces of the backside. Sand to smooth. Use the lensboard holder to attach the sanded front standard to its sides. Glue and secure with right-angle clamps.

    5

Glue the rear standard and then use a jigsaw to notch the standard's back. Chip out the middle by making two parallel cuts. Next mount the L screws into the standard's pilot holes.

    6

Use wood finish, such as Danish oil or wax. to help bind the parts, and paint for the light traps. Use masking tape to protect areas that need no paint. Then remove tape before the paint hardens.

    7

    Mount the bellows.

Boudoir Photography Techniques

Boudoir Photography Techniques

People who want a boudoir portrait done seek to express themselves sensually through a photograph. Your job as the photographer is to make subjects feel at ease while capturing them in a flattering way. Knowing how to work with your subject and your camera will give you the best portrait possible.

Lighting

Boudoir photography lighting is traditionally lower and softer than traditional portrait photography. Sometimes, significant parts of the subject's body are in darkness, while other parts, like the profile, shoulders or back, are highlighted.

The built-in flash on most cameras is too harsh and too close to the camera's lens to use as your light source. A better option is to use lights with softboxes and a white backdrop. This will make the lighting soft, warm and diffused. The white backdrop will also help prevent extra colors being cast onto the subject, which can happen especially when the room has bright wall colors.

In low light, many cameras require a low shutter speed to take a good picture. In this case, you may want to bring along a tripod to eliminate blurriness in the picture.

Set-Up

When you're setting the scene for a boudoir shoot, understand that you can work with the room. For a subject-focused portrait, you may not need to do much, because you will probably shoot the subject without including the surroundings. However, if you want a soft, sensual boudoir portrait, you can use soft furnishings like couches, chairs or bed linens that help to make the scene look warm and inviting.

Working with the Subject

It is important to develop a trusting relationship with your subject before beginning the shoot because he will probably be nude or semi-nude, and in order for you to capture his personality, he'll need to feel natural and at ease.

Reassure the subject that you're capturing her most flattering features and that the scene looks good.

Using a tripod is a good way to work with the subject because you can make eye contact during the shoot.

Finishing

Once you complete the boudoir photo shoot, you can use photo retouching software to finish your photographs. Techniques such as airbrushing and color and lighting adjustments help you to make your photos look professional. However, remember that your subject probably does not want to look unnatural, so use discretion when airbrushing. According to Boudoir Photography.org, the best airbrushing looks invisible, as if you haven't done anything to the photograph at all.

How to Set up a Freelance Photography Business

Freelance generally means that you work for yourself or take on contract jobs for several different companies on a per diem basis. Most of the time freelancers work from their home, and most freelance photographs do their shooting on location. If you are a good photographer, you can easily make a living doing what you love.

Instructions

Set Up Shop as a Photographer

    1

Order nice business cards. it's a good idea to have miniature samples of your photography on the card. Since the card is small, opt for only a couple of photographs. Include your name, phone number, email address, and your title as a freelance photographer.

    2

Decide on a price list for your photographs and services. Decide if you will charge a sitting fee for portrait shots. Some photographers do and some don't. Weddings are quoted at either a flat fee, or you can charge by the hour for your services.

    3

Check to see what other photographers in your area are charging, and price yourself accordingly. You don't want to overprice at the risk of losing fantastic jobs, but you will be considered low quality if you charge too tiny of a fee.

    4

Pass out your business cards to family, friends and co-workers. Leave them in beauty salons, and offer to do glamor photos on site if the owner is willing to work with you. Promote your services everywhere you go.

    5

Keep a record of expenses for anything related to your freelance work. Some things are tax deductible and some are not. Ask a tax professional to help you with this. Always log the mileage on your vehicle if you are going on location to work.

    6

Ask for referrals whenever you are hired to do any photography work. If you come up with a referral fee, you can grow your business by an even more aggressive word of mouth.

    7

Keep your options open. Always have your photographic equipment with you. You may stumble across a newsworthy shot you can sell to the local paper.

Web Marketing for Your Business

    8

Contact stock photography agencies that purchase photographs for resale or downloads. You can upload many landscapes and other photographs to these web sites just by joining. You won't get rich, but it will be a source of income.

    9

Build a web site of your own. You can have an on-line portfolio of your work displayed, and you can market yourself to potential web clients that may be looking for specific photos for their own web site.

    10

Do continual web searches for companies that buy stock photography. Many buy all rights to photographs to reproduce them into larger posters, calendars or art displays.
