How to Install Plug-ins for Paint.net

Many users of paint.net claim that it can do anything that Adobe Photoshop can do with the proper plug-ins. This is fantastic news for those who want to do some serious image editing or creation but do not want to shell out several hundred dollars to do it. But what is a plug-in, and how do you get one?
Plug-ins are codes written by other people to achieve certain effects within the program, such as a specific type of blur. They are usually free, but some creators choose to charge for their plug-in downloads.

Instructions

    If you have the paint.net program running, you will need to close it before beginning to install plug-ins.

    Click on the download link provided by the creator and then click "Save" when the dialog box asks if you want to save, run, or cancel. When choosing where to save the file, it is usually easiest to save to your desktop.

    If the downloaded files come in a compressed or "zip" format, you will need to extract them. To do this, right-click on the file folder and click on the "Extract All" option. Save the extracted files to your desktop.

    Now that the files have been extracted you need to put them into paint.net.

    Most plug-in files are ".dll" files. These need to be placed into the effects folder in the paint.net program. To do this, first open the files in Windows Explorer by going to "My Computer" and then to "Desktop" and then clicking on the file name. Left-click on the file that you wish to move.

    You will see an option to "Move this file" on the left side of the Windows Explorer screen. Click this option. This will pull up a new window with a directory from which you can choose where to move the file. Click "Program Files" and then find and click "Paint.net." From here you will see several folders including the "Effects" folder. Highlight the "Effects" folder and click the "move" button in the lower right of the directory window.

How to Upload Raw Files

Most digital cameras give the option to record images in multiple file types. While the default is to save pictures in a joint photographers expert group (JPEG) format, many photographers don't like the data lost during compression that comes with this file type. When you're taking pictures in raw or untouched format, more visual information is stored in the file, according to the Luminous Landscape website. After taking raw pictures, upload them to a computer. Once uploaded, alter and enhance your pictures using a photo manipulation software program.

    Turn on your digital camera. Use the universal serial bus (USB) cable that came with the camera and plug the small end of the USB cable into the USB port on the side of the digital camera. Plug the larger end of the cable into a USB port on your computer.

    Click "Open Files and Folders" if a window pops up asking you what you want to do. If nothing pops up, click the "Start" menu button. Click "Computer." Double-click the icon for your digital camera to open up the file and folders on your memory card.

    Click through the folders on the memory card until you find the raw files you want to upload. Click and hold the raw file icon and drag it to a folder on your computer, whether on the desktop or in a dedicated "Pictures" folder. This uploads the raw files to your PC. This may take a few minutes depending upon image sizes and how many pictures you're uploading.

    Close the window for the contents of the digital camera's memory card. Unplug the USB cable from the computer and turn off the power to the digital camera. Double click on the appropriate software for viewing and editing.
