What Is Incandescent Lighting As Related to Photography?

When taking photographs, the source and type of light must be considered to ensure that colors are accurately recorded. Incandescent light is produce in a bulb containing a filament, usually tungsten, and will produced a warmer, redder color than sunlight.

Color and Color Temperature

    Sunlight produces natural color
    Sunlight produces natural color

Incandescent lights are also called hot lights or tungsten lights and a standard household bulb is a good example. Fluorescent lighting, commonly found in commercial or industrial settings, produces a cooler, bluer color than incandescent lights, so the two should not be confused. Photographers use a color temperature scale to help them determine how different lighting will effect the overall color cast of their photos.

Color temperature scale

Cool candle produces warm, red color
Cool candle produces warm, red color

Photographers use the Kelvin temperature scale (K) to distinguish light color. Direct sunlight is about 5,200K to 5,550K. Commercial tungsten lights are about 3,500K and domestic tungsten bulbs (incandescent) are about 2,800K. Cooler lights produce a more red color cast, much like a candle produces a warm ambiance.

Film balance and white balance

Most film is balanced for sunlight and so some correction, called daylight conversion, will be needed if incandescent lighting is used instead of sunlight. Digital cameras have a white balance capability which is designed to correct for different light such as direct sun, incandescent and flourescent. The white balance on a digital camera can also be adjusted by temperature using the Kelvin temperature scale.

Color correction

There are several methods to correct for light color. Film is produced for different types of light, so selecting the proper film is important and a tungsten-balanced film will correct incandescent lighting. Filters that directly attach to the camera lens and are designed for color correction will also correct for different types of light. A blue 80A filter will correct for the warm incandescent light and produce a naturally colored photo. Using a graphics program to process digital photos will provide some sophisticated methods to improve color casts too.

Artistic lighting

In some cases, a reddish color cast is desired by the photographer. The reason may be to produce a warmer photograph. In this case, unfiltered and uncorrected incandescent lighting is used.

How to Make a Profit From Landscaping Photography

How to Make a Profit From Landscaping Photography

Landscape photography captures images of places others only dream of venturing to or wish they could capture themselves. If you are a good landscape photographer, you deserve to receive compensation for your talents. You can pursue a career in landscape photography. When it comes to landscape photography, your talent and ability to market your art are key to being successful. It may take a while for a photographer to start making a profit from their craft, but persistence will reap the rewards sought.

Instructions

    1

Sell your images to stock photo companies. Stock photo companies purchase photographs of landmarks and landscape scenery that they, in turn, sell to companies using the photograph for commercial purposes. This type of photography is user-submitted, which means a photographer presents selected photographs to the stock photo company and the stock photo company picks their favorite photographs. The photographer is paid for each image submitted or earns a commission.

    2

Sell your photographs to magazines. Travel magazines, magazines about outdoor sports and regional magazines all purchase photographs of landscapes. If you are interested in trying to sell your works to a magazine, go to that particular publication's website and look for their submission guidelines, which tell you how to submit a photo and give details about the types of work the publication needs.

    3

Host a show featuring your artwork. After you have a collection of works based on a landscape theme, such as "Scenes from America's Rivers," host an art show that lets the public enjoy your photographs. Consider holding the art show at a community center, library or even a coffee shop. Remember to bring business cards and extra prints of your landscape photos for those who would like to purchase your work or get a hold of you in the future.

    4

Place your photos on merchandise to sell. There are a handful of websites that allow you to upload your landscape photographs onto different items. The sites sell the items on your behalf and you keep the mark-up price for profit. Examples of merchandise include postcards, journals, mouse pads, poster prints, wooden boxes, ornaments and stickers.

    5

Enter a landscape photography competition. Photography magazines, photo-processing companies and private photography companies often hold landscape photography competitions for prizes. Entering a competition can help you earn some extra cash and gain more exposure.

How to Make a Photography Portfolio

The first thing anyone who is trying to break into the photography business needs is a nice portfolio of sample photographs to show. A photographer's portfolio is much like a visual business card. While being necessary to your career, a portfolio is also easy to put together.

Instructions

    1

Purchase the very best portfolio case you can afford. You will be presenting this case to many potential clients, so it needs to look professional. Check local camera stores or online outlets for the best prices. Portfolios range from $20 to several hundred dollars.

    2

Choose a portfolio case that allows you to continue adding photographs as your business grows. If you cannot afford to buy, or can't find, a professional portfolio case, purchase a very nice leather-bound photo album instead. Make sure the sleeve inserts are high quality and acid-free.

    3

Sort through the photographs you already have. Choose your very best work. Have them enlarged to an 8 by 10 size by a professional, or enlarge them on your computer if you have high-quality software and printers to work with. If you print them yourself, use high-quality satin photo paper.

    4

Offer to do some free portrait sittings if you need to expand your portfolio. People who are pursuing a modeling career will be glad to work with you. Both of you get some practice work and get to keep photographs to further your career. Mothers of small children will also be happy to have them sit in exchange for a free portrait.

    5

Arrange your photographs in the portfolio in a way that shows all of your talents. Don't group them into categories. Arrange them randomly into landscape, portrait, candids, weddings or whatever else you prefer. The key is to keep a prospective client interested enough to keep looking.

Boudoir Photo Tips

Boudoir Photo Tips

A person doesn't have to have the body of a supermodel to pose for a sexy and alluring boudoir photograph. Boudoir photography makes the subject look beautiful in a variety of poses and settings and creates a finished product that makes a wonderful gift for a significant other. Boudoir photography adds glamour and prestige to a photographer's portfolio as well.

Set the Scene

Before beginning a boudoir photography session, set a relaxed tone for the subject and photographer by playing music appropriate to the scene. Soft jazz or new age inspires a soft, sensual feel, whereas big band or swing music creates a fun and festive atmosphere for a series of retro-inspired pinup photos.

Adjust the lighting as appropriate to accent the model's figure. In a studio setting, a variety of lights can be used for dramatic highlight and shadow effects. The photographer should have an array of props and scenic items such as feather boas, fans and lengths of flowing fabric, but the model should be encouraged to bring in props of her own. These items would showcase her interests or those of her significant other. A photographer shooting a homemaking queen of the kitchen could pose her wearing an apron and holding her favorite cooking tools. Utilize both familiar and niche sexy objects to customize the photos to their subject.

Preparing the Model

Makeup for the shoot can be glamorous or natural depending on what kind of look the model is going for. Style hair in a dramatic way since the boudoir photo shoot typically portrays a look outside the everyday norm.
The model should choose her own wardrobe _if any _ and experiment with a few looks and poses until she starts to have fun. Some boudoir photo subjects will be immediately adventurous and at ease, but others will be shy and uncomfortable. Making conversation puts both the photographer and the model at ease and should spark a more natural experience for both.

Posing

Contorting the subject's body into unnatural poses for beauty's sake works for major fashion photographers with professional models. It doesn't work so well in boudoir photo shoots with inexperienced models. The photographer should pose the model in a comfortable position and frame the shot to highlight her best assets.
The model may be posing nude or semi-nude for the first time. If she feels uncomfortable exposing a part of her body, the photographer should shadow it or drape it to best accent the parts with which she feels more comfortable.

After the Shoot

Prints can be airbrushed or retouched during the development process if the model is concerned about any of her perceived flaws. Certain photo print enhancements, like color tinting on black and white, can give the shots an extra romantic look.
