DIY Light Box Display

A light box is a portable studio, which allows for precision control over lighting. Light boxes are ideal for any type of object-based photography, whether the subjects are homemade crafts or consumer products. A commercially available version of these mini-studios can cost hundreds of dollars, while building a light box can typically done for under $100.

Instructions

Slide one of the PVC tees on to each end of the 30-inch PVC pipes.

Apply CPVC glue onto the end each PVC street elbow. Attach the PVC street elbows onto each of the PVC tees.

Slide four of the 15-inch PVC pipes in the openings on the, now attached, PVC street elbows.

Cement the four remaining 15-inch PVC pipes into the openings of the PVC tees.

Place the poster board into the box, so that it gently curves along the back of the box and out the front.

Cover the entire box by laying the the white fabric over it, so that only a single opening in the front is visible.

Position the lamps outside of the box, so that they shine into the box through the fabric.

Family portraits allow all of the family members to come together and record an event that they will always remember. Taking a family portrait involves coordinating clothes with your family members and getting in front of a background. A black background can give your family a dramatic effect that you cannot get with a white background. It is then up to your photographer to give you a portrait that represents your family.

Instructions

Coordinate outfits with the entire family. Ensure that everyone has the same type of outfit on. For example, you and your family can wear jeans with a shirt or the women can wear dresses and the men can wear suits.

Wear the same color. Photography Tips and Techniques states that individuals should wear black in front of a black background. You and your family members should wear black shirts and blouses in front of the background to make the picture stand out. Ensure that your outfit does not clash with the background.

Arrange your family in different poses throughout the shoot. Normally, the photographer will be doing this, but you can too, if you have a few ideas.

Homemade Polarizing Filter

To improve your landscape photography, a polarizing filter is one of the first camera accessories you should invest in. It works by filtering out light that polarizes at a 90-degree angle to the camera lens, thereby reducing the glare of reflections from bodies of water and other shiny surfaces in landscapes. A polarizing filter also makes skies appear to be a deeper, richer blue and darkens shadows. Although factory-made polarizing filters can be expensive, you can make your own out of an old filter attachment and any number of household objects.

Instructions

Obtain a filter attachment that fits on your camera, either by buying a special empty attachment, repurposing an old or damaged filter or making your own out of a can or even a cardboard tube.

Trace the outline of your lens attachment onto the polarizing material.

Cut the shape of the filter out of the polarizing material, making sure the cutout is about a quarter-inch longer in diameter than the actual filter attachment.

If the edges of the cutout are sharp, sand them down until they are smooth.

Glue the cutout to your filter mount. Clamp it under a book or other heavy object if desired. Let the cutout dry completely before using it.

How to Look at Black & White Photography

Studying well-done black and white photography is a key way to improve your own technique. Black and white photography, also known as monochrome, emphasizes lighting and subject matter to draw in viewers in the absence of color. Paying attention to several key elements of outstanding black and white photography will give you insight on how to make better images during your next shoot.

Take note of the subject matter of the images you study. The black and white medium tends to help viewers reconsider the nature of everyday objects. The mundane can be portrayed as a work of art, and a sense of nostalgia can be created. Look at a wide range of black and white image subjects, and imagine how they would look in color and whether the images would have as much power. This will help you choose subjects specifically for monochrome photography.

Evaluate the amount of contrast that is in the black and white image and the artistic implications it holds. Contrast is the difference between the brightest highlights and the darkest shadows. High-contrast images tend to be dramatic and artistic, with subjects that are intellectually provocative and challenging. Low-contrast images tend to hold a less dramatic tone and are often used to capture sentimental moments.

Learn the terms "low-key" and "high-key" when studying black and white photography. Low-key monochrome images have a darker overall style, dominated by darker tones. High-key images are made of mostly lighter tones. Apply these terms to photographs you view to better understand their style.

Notice the lighting style of the monochrome images and the way it affects their composition. With no color to draw the eye, lighting becomes the driving force of a black and white picture. Lighting creates texture, line and shape with highlights and shadows. Observe the way lighting portrays these elements with varying tones of black, white and gray.

Make your best guess as to what type of lighting was used to create the images you study. Soft light comes from dawn, dusk or overcast skies and creates soft, undefined shadows. Soft lighting can be reproduced with artificial light masked in a large soft box or umbrella. Hard light comes from late morning to midday sun. It creates bright highlights and well-defined shadows. Hard light is reproduced artificially with small light sources such as light bulbs or bare camera flashes. Knowing these different lighting styles will help you choose the lighting for your next shoot with more insight.

How to Make Portable Photo Lighting

A portable photo studio light is one that disassembles easily and provides the functionality of a professional photographic light. Most light kits are designed to be portable. However, a self-made light kit may be cheaper, and you can customize what model of components you want. Photography stores will carry the necessary parts, but check online photography retailers as well; they are sometimes significantly cheaper. The prices for studio lights vary greatly from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

Purchase a light bulb with housing. A 500-watt tungsten or day light bulb should be powerful enough for most photographers. However, your needs as a photographer will determine what kind of bulb you should get. The housing is what the bulb screws into. The housing should have the required components to attach a light box or reflector umbrella; almost all housing units have these.

Purchase a stand. The stand is what the light housing will connect to. The stand will come with the appropriate connectors to attach to the housing. The design of the stand should allow you to collapse and adjust it. Most stand designs will let you do this. Make sure the range of height is adequate for your needs. Also ensure that the base is wide and sturdy, so it will not be knocked over easily.

Purchase a light box or reflector umbrella. Both items will help diffuse the light from the bulb, softening it. Both items should cost the same amount. The light box is a fabric box that goes over the housing and has the light shine through a white screen. The reflector umbrella looks exactly like a normal umbrella, except it sticks into the end of the housing and reflects light back. Make sure that either the light box or reflector umbrella is compatible with the housing; most light boxes and reflector umbrellas will be compatible.
