Tips to Shoot With a Polarizing Filter

Slipping on a pair of polarized sunglasses can be like seeing into a new world. Colors can be more intense, The absence of glare makes things seem sharper, and reflections on glass surfaces may disappear. Slipping a polarizer on your camera does much of the same for your photographs, giving saturation a boost.

Contemporary cameras use beam splitters in their exposure and focus systems. Linear polarizing filters may affect the accuracy of these systems and are not recommend for use with these cameras unless you can bypass both autofocus and exposure systems. Circular polarizers, while not as dramatic in terms of reducing polarized light, are compatible with autofocus and exposure systems.

When you're shooting in daylight, polarized light is greatest at an angle of 90 degrees off axis with the sun. You can "calculate" this by making your hand into a gun, pointing your index finger at the sun. Rotating your wrist back and forth will point to the part of the sky where the polarizing effect is the greatest.

Light reflecting off any non-metallic surface will be polarized to some extent. This light can be canceled by your filter. Putting this principle into practice, you may be able to reduce dramatically the images reflecting off a shop window, allowing you to shoot inside a building. Light reflecting off water can be filtered the same way, giving a more natural appearance to beach scenes.

When you're photographing plants and flowers, tiny droplets of water on the surfaces create a haze of polarized light. Adding a polarizing filter can remove the effect of the scattering haze, giving you deep, rich color effects. Similarly, under the right conditions, a polarizing lens can help cut through atmospheric haze in landscape shots.

Why Won't My Telephoto Lens Focus?

A telephoto lens allows for a long focus in photography, with a shorter length than that of other long-focus lenses. Any lens with a focal range above 100mm is classed as telephoto and will allow you to zoom in close to a shot without jeopardizing pixel quality. Telephoto lenses are ideal for capturing photographs at a variety of distances and allow you to photograph without intruding upon your subjects.

Switching the mode to auto focus (there is a switch at the front of the camera near to where the lens detaches) is more effective for situations where you may need to shoot quickly or capture a subject that is fast-moving. Using auto focus mode will nearly always allow you to focus quickly and accurately using the camera's built-in sensors but is often less suitable for macro shots or where a very specific focus area or depth of field is required.

If you always use manual focus with your telephoto lens, it is likely that you will struggle to focus correctly on most of the shots you take. Using the manual mode deactivates the camera's built-in ability to focus on a specified subject, and the lens must be twisted very carefully at the front to bring the subject to a perfect focus. Every time you move, the photo will need refocusing. The manual focus, however, is ideal for shots where you can take your time, specifically macro (close-up) shots, which require a precision focus the auto focus might not correctly pick up on.

Although the telephoto lens allows you to zoom in accurately from a distance, it is often possible to over zoom on a subject that is quite close. If the auto focus is struggling at an extended zoom and the subject will be there for a while, try manual focus; otherwise take a few steps back from the subject matter to regain clarity of focus and crop the edges of the photo in the editing process instead.

There is a range of settings to help you auto focus your subject. The Wide focus is useful when you are shooting at a wide angle without a specific point of focus; the Spot focus is appropriate if you have a single point in the picture you wish to retain focus; and Local focus allows for several points of focus within the lens, ideal if you are shooting a variety of subjects at different depths of field.

How to Take Good Pictures of People in Poses

Taking great photos of our friends and family is important to all of us. With digital photography, it's relatively easily for you to practice your skills on a regular basis at low cost. There's no time like today to gather your favorite subjects and turn them into models. Before you know it, you'll be shooting like a professional and eager to share your work.

Ask your nearest friend or family member for an hour of their time to model for you. You will find that most people will jump at the opportunity. It's good to start with a short time slot like this, so that neither of you will get bored or frustrated.

Go outside and find the sunlight source. Natural light makes it a breeze to lend a professional look to your photos. Not only is it lovely, but it's plentiful and free. The most optimal time of day is at dawn and dusk, as the lighting is soft yet dramatic. Be sure your camera and battery are fully charged and your memory card is ready to go.

Catching model offguard makes an interesting shot.

Locate an interesting backdrop for your model. Keep it simple and relatively free of details. An unobstructed wall, large tree or tall hedge are great. Avoid any areas where moving cars or passers-by could distract you.

Position your camera with the sun behind you. Never take photos with the sun in front of the camera, as it will cause a glare in the lens, rendering the subject virtually useless. On the flip side, ensure the sun isn't beaming directly into your model's eyes, causing her to squint.

Ask your model to stand in a natural pose, with her weight shifting naturally to one side of her body. Her legs should be slightly bent and spread apart, shoulders somewhat slouched, and chin lifted up a bit. If your subject is standing in front of a wall or tree trunk, have her lean against it as though they are relaxing. The look you are going for is asymmetrical and natural. Never take a photo of a subject dead-on or perfectly centered, as it is not only awkward, but boring. Take a variety of photos from the waist up as well as full body. Try for a fabulous head-shot, which should be tastefully cropped from just below the shoulders to right above the hairline.

Hats are a great prop for men and women.

Hand the model her prop. Flowers are great for a female subject, and a hat is universal for men and women. Have the model change her poses to reflect her reaction to the prop. Simultaneously check your viewfinder as well as the model directly to make sure the prop isn't covering her face or getting out of frame. The best cropping is as close to the body as possible, and slightly off-center. This way, the viewer gets a slight taste of the model's surroundings, yet is focused more on the model.

Set up the chair and pose your model in the following unisex positions. With model sitting on the very front edge of the chair, direct her to have one knee bent forward with both hands on it, while the other leg is spread out to the side as though they are stretching in a relaxed manner. Another pose for men and women is to place the chair sideways, have your model straddle the chair with their rear as far back as possible on the seat. Her back should be slightly arched, arms folded at the top of the chair with head resting on the top hand, while looking relaxed at the camera.

Thank your model for her time. Prepare a personal portfolio as a reward. Share your portfolio with other family and friends. Their reactions may help you on future shoots.
