How to Remove a Flash Glare From Digital Photos

Photographs remind people of their most memorable moments. Most cameras have a built-in flash to compensate for areas that are dark or not well-lit. The flash takes an average of the light and reflects this to the image. There are many things that can cause the flash to take an inaccurate reading and one of those is glass. Whether you are pointing the camera at something that has glass behind it, in front of it or even a mirror near it, that glass can cause what is known as flash glare.

Set up lights --- if you are using them --- so they don't cast a direct light onto the subject of your photo. Many professional photographers bring extra lighting to set up around the subjects.

Have anyone wearing glasses point their faces a half-inch off-center of the camera. This will help prevent a head-on glare from the flash.

Hold the camera at a 30-degree angle to the glass in front of the subject you are shooting. This is useful when shooting through a display case or window.

Transfer the photo to your computer once you have captured it. Either connect your camera to your computer with a USB cable or insert the memory card into the computer itself. Launch a photo-editing program and open the photo in the program. Different programs vary on how to open photos. Select the spot-healing tool, which, in Photoshop, looks like a bandage, if you still have glares in your photo. Click on an area of the photo that most closely resembles the picture underneath the glare. Some editing programs will tell you to click the "Alt" key while clicking a spot on the photo. This will be the image that will replace the glare.

Change the size of the tool brush if you have a small area to fix. Do this by clicking on the drop-down menu in the top toolbar and decreasing the number to decrease the size of the brush.

How to Remove Shadows With a Wide Angle Lens

Wide angle lenses can present you with a number of interesting opportunities as a photographer. By expanding the field of view in your photographs, they allow you to take more in. However, in addition to the usual challenges you will face when adjusting to using your wide angle lens, you may also be presented with unwanted shadows on your images. This is a problem associated with combing the use of a wide angle lens with the built in flash on your camera, and is a common problem for a number of different makes and models of camera.

Taking The Picture

Take your photos from a 20mm to 24mm zoom to reduce the amount of shadows. Avoid zooming to 18mm and wider, as this will see a dramatic increase in the size and the shadow.

Invest in a basic lighting kit that includes lights and adjustable stands. By using a basic kit you will be able to light your subject without using the built in flash.

Utilize natural light in your photography. Make the most of any natural light available. If the image is too dark try adjusting your camera's ISO and shutter speed to lighten the image. As well as removing shadows this can also add a natural look to your images.

Run Photoshop or another photo manipulation software such as Google Picasa and GIMP. Click "File" then "Run" or double click on the desktop icon to launch the software.

Open the picture with the shadows in Photoshop by clicking "File" then "Open" from the drop down menu. Select the image from your computer and click the "Open" button.

Click on your image in the layers palette then click "Layer" and choose "Duplicate Layer" from the list of drop down options. Create 2 duplicate layers above your original layer before turning the original layer off by deselecting the "eye" symbol next to the layer.

Select the top layer and change the blending mode to screen by clicking "Layer" in the layers palette and choosing "Screen" from the list of options. You should see the shadows become lighter.

Merge the 2 duplicate layers together by clicking "Layer" followed by "Merge Down." Duplicate the newly merged layer in the same way you duplicated the original layer.

Use the quick selection tool to select the area of the image that you want to remove the shadows from.

Click "Select" and choose "Inverse" before pressing the "Delete" button on your keyboard to isolate the shadow.
