Ontario Photography Grants

Ontario Photography Grants

Photography is a visual medium that requires equipment and materials to produce pieces and space to display them. There are a number of grant and funding opportunities for professional photographers in Ontario to support the creation, production and display of photographic works. Funding is also available for organizations, such as galleries and museums, that display photographs for the public.

Canada Council for the Arts

The Canada Council for the Arts offers a number of grants for visual arts, including photography. Photographers can apply for project grants of up to $20,000 per year and long-term grants of up to $80,000 over two years. All Canada Council grants are for artists who already have professional experience and have had numerous public exhibitions of their work. The Canada Council also offers grants for galleries or museums for the acquisition and exhibition of visual art, including photography. Grants in this category include the Professional Canadian Contemporary Art Dealers grant of up to $20,000 and the Acquisition Assistance for Art Galleries and Museums Grant of up to $30,000.

How to Judge and Critique Photos

Saying that you like or love a picture is not a photography critique; it means nothing to the people reading your comments and is of no help to the photographer. That's not to say critiquing a photograph is only for the experts; you don't need an in-depth knowledge in the field to feel that the background is too blurry or a certain area is too dark. Look at a photograph, be honest and expressive about what strikes you about it and always remember that you are giving an opinion -- photography is rarely about right and wrong.

Instructions

    1

Take a good long look at the photograph. Make notes of anything you notice and want to mention.

    2

Explain your interpretation of the photograph. Say what message you believe the photographer is trying to say with this photograph or what story is being told.

    3

Express the emotions that the photograph made you feel. If you felt a sudden rush of anger, then say it.

    4

Note any technical issues with the photograph. The main subject should be in clear focus, colors shouldn't be over saturated and any unintentional motion blur should be criticized. Look for any issues with the lighting, contrast and exposure, too.

    5

Separate which technical issues were accidental and which were intended to create a desired effect. Technical issues are the only time there is a right and wrong in photography, but be careful not to mistake a technical error for an artistic choice. For example an out of focus background may be poor photography or it could be intended to make the subject of the shot stand out more.

    6

Talk about the photographer's choices and what you made of them. Perhaps the picture is cluttered with objects or the photo is cropped so tightly that an object has been cut off that could have enhanced the picture. Decide what worked and what didn't.

    7

Express any views on the photograph as your opinion and not as right or wrong when dealing with the photographer's choices rather than technical errors. Don't talk about the rules of photography as these are more like guidelines; the best photographers will break these rules to capture a great image. Remember, what one person likes about a photograph another person may hate.

    8

Explain how you would improve any issues that you criticized. For example, if you found that the subject did not stand out enough, then you may suggest removing some unnecessary objects that are making the picture too busy or take out one particularly distracting feature.

    9

Condense all of the points you have been making into a summary to finish. These last words are the ones that people will remember the most so make sure they represent what you really thought of the photograph. Whether you liked the photograph or disliked it should be made clear now.

How to Take Pictures of Wildlife at Night

How to Take Pictures of Wildlife at Night

Taking wildlife pictures at night requires proper equipment, including a powerful zoom, since you must stay relatively far away from the animals for your safety and theirs. Additionally, you need to set your camera to take in as much light as possible and have the quickest shutter speed to catch the action.

Instructions

    1

Select your hiding spot/vantage point. It should be far enough away from the animal you are trying to photograph that you dont scare it or endanger yourself, but close enough that your cameras zoom can capture it in detail.

    2

Go to your preselected vantage point when the moon is out so you have some background light. Take a flashlight to help you see the buttons on the camera and, if need be, to spotlight the animal you are trying to photograph. Use a red light source, since it is less visible to animals. If you dont have a red bulb, you can cover the flashlight with red cellophane paper.

    3

Use a camera with at least a 200 mm lens. Digital SLR (single-lens reflex) cameras such as the Nikon D60 or the Canon Digital Rebel enable you to swap lenses from 200 mm to 500 mm. These cameras will give you greater zoom power.

    4

Stabilize your camera on a tripod or a sturdy surface such as tree stump. Having your camera steady helps keep images from blurring. Low-light situations need long exposure times to capture all available light, and any shake of the camera will blur the image. Longer focal lengths (zoom) also make the images more susceptible to blurring.

    5

Set your camera on night mode setting. Usually this is indicated by an icon of a moon or stars. You can also set this from your settings menu.

    6

Turn off your flash, if night mode doesnt automatically do it. The flash may overexpose your photo or scare the animal away. The flash shoots a burst of light that is most effective for up-close shots, not long-distance shooting.

    7

Set your camera to shoot at the absolute fastest shutter speed. You can do this by setting the camera to aperture priority mode or to the highest aperture setting possible. The aperture controls the amount of light the camera takes in; the higher the speed, the more light goes in.

    8

Increase your ISOa measurement of the camera's sensitivity to lightto get more shutter speed, allowing you to freeze the action. An ISO of 3200, for example, will get you exposures of around 1/60 second. Be aware that a higher ISO will introduce more digital noise into your photos.

Inkjet Vs. Lab Photos

Inkjet Vs. Lab Photos

The convenience of software and being able to download photos from a camera makes inkjet printing of images appealing. However, users discover there are some significant differences between inkjet-produced photos and professional printing from a lab.

Cost of Prints

The toner of inkjet printers produces the major cost with this type of image production. A toner cartridge may only cost $10 to $13, as of 2010. However, many color printers require at least four base colors. Lab printing costs between 20 cents to 50 cents per print in 2010.

Ease of Production

With Internet-based services available that send photos to a nearby convenience store, the only work involved in lab printing is choosing the prints, paying the cost and picking up the photos. Inkjet involves running the printing process image by image and providing space to allow prints to dry properly. This can become inconvenient when printing a large number of photos.

Quality

Inkjet images are only as good as the printer that produces them. If the ink level malfunctions or the printer heads skip, you see the lines in the print and discoloration. Inkjet prints are made with water and bleed and fade over time. Lab photos are produced with silver halide. The prints meet archival demands and don't deteriorate immediately if exposed to moisture.

Inkjet Vs.
