How to Sell Photos to Stock Photo Companies

How to Sell Photos to Stock Photo Companies

If you have a digital camera and want to get started on a photography career, you may be able to sell your photos to stock photo companies. Anyone can submit her photos to stock photo companies, such as iStockPhoto and ShutterPoint, but not all submissions are accepted by these companies. Certain file requirements must be met to sell photos to stock photo companies. Sometimes having photos of things that are needed is a good way to get in with a stock photo company.

Instructions

    1

Take some photos in digital format because most stock photo agencies want an online submission of your work. General requirements for stock photos are files sized 1600-by-1200 pixels or larger, in the RGB color spectrum and formatted as JPG files.

    2

Create a free account with the stock photo agency you are interested in selling photos to. Examples include ShutterPoint and iStockPhoto.

    3

Upload the photos you are interested in selling. Typically new accounts can only submit one to three photos initially. If those images pass the requirements, you will be allowed to upload more photos. For the best results, look around the website of the stock photo company to see if they have a list of images they are in need of, such as the iStockPhoto Needed Files page (see Resources).

    4

Title your images and insert keywords. It is important that these are accurate because this is how people find your images on the stock photo website. You do not get to set a price; the stock photo agency sets the price for all of your photos.

    5

Wait for someone to purchase your photos from the stock photo companies. Typically there is a minimum amount that you have to have in your account before you can cash out and get paid. As of January 2010, the limit is $100 with iStockPhoto and $50 with ShutterPoint.
