How to Make a High Key Lighting Studio

How to Make a High Key Lighting Studio

High key lighting is a quality of light that is popular in fresh, contemporary photography, but is not a new concept "If I had but one backdrop to use for portraiture, I would choose a simple roll of white seamless paper." says editorial photographer Zack Arias. Legendary photographers such as Richard Avedon and Herb Ritts also pioneered the clean, high-key photography look. High key is when the quality of light is a vivid, pure white that essentially blows out any shadow detail. High-key lighting invokes a positive tone and is generally used when photographing children, high school seniors and newborns. High key is also used for fashion and product photography to effectively showcase what is being advertised. Shooting studio high key is dependent on developing your knowledge of exposure values and having the proper equipment in your studio.

Instructions

    1

Set up your high-key studio room. Your space should be at about 20 by 20 with ceilings at least 10 feet tall. The walls must be a neutral color, preferably white. Color walls will produce undesirable color casts that the camera will pick up. Dark walls will absorb light and create shadows.

    2

Mount the white seamless paper to a background support system. The light will bounce off the backdrop and will eliminate any shadows from your subject. When positioning your subject, make sure to position them at least 2 to 3 feet away from the background.

    3

Position your strobes. Two strobes should be directed toward the seamless background on either side of your subject, at a 45 degree angle. The umbrellas will serve in bouncing light, as the quality of light is stronger with umbrella modifiers.

    4

Position your fill light and key light. The key light will be on a 45-degree angle to the left of your subject. The fill light will be 45 degrees to the right. Both lights should be 6 to 7 feet away from your subject. The reason there is a fill light is to fill in the key-light shadows. Modify the light with soft boxes. You will need to reposition the strobes until the distance and size of the light is desirable. Meter each of your lights separately with your light meter.

    5

Fine tune your studio lights, Use a silver reflector on your subject if more light is needed. Set the backdrops' light output one f-stop higher than your key light. Your key light may be at f8, therefore your backdrop light should be f5.6. In larger studios you may see better results with f stops exceeding one stop--in some cases two to three stops.
