Direct Lighting Characteristics

Direct Lighting Characteristics

One major element that plays in photography is lighting. Without a proper light source, the picture could come out ugly, underexposed or overexposed. Proper lighting helps the photographer achieve a level of control in the picture to bring out the color, sharpness, and detail of his subject. There are several different types of light sources such as the sun, interior lighting or even a camera flash. Direct lighting in photography is created when the light source points and shines directly on the object.

Flattening Objects

When a subject is hit with direct lighting, it flattens out three dimensional details. For example, if a cylinder has a picture taken with direct lighting then it has a very similar look to the box that stands right beside it. This is because there is no gradation, or lack of a gradual lighting shift, between the sides completely lit to those that are shadowed.

Shadows

Direct lighting has a tendency to create extremely dark and hard-edged shadows. This attribute can be used to enhance features with an equal distribution of light and shadow. One example could be taking photographs of rock formations, where direct lighting creates shadows that give a feeling of depth and angularity.

Direct Diffused Lighting

In this instance, the direct light is diffused or filtered either through or against objects. It can diffuse through surfaces like a screened wall, tree leaves, water and glass. In this instance of direct lighting, more detail in the shadows can be seen since it is not as intensely black compared to non-diffused direct lighting.
