How to Become a Photographer in Pakistan

How to Become a Photographer in Pakistan

With a population of more than 165 million and two major cities of more than 12 million, Pakistan has no shortage of people and places for a photographer. The country faces continual economic crisis and an unstable central government, which makes pursuing the dream of becoming a professional photographer in Pakistan all the more difficult. It can be done however, with dedication and determination. Follow these steps to make it happen.

Instructions

    1

Decide what camera equipment you'll need to take the type of shots you'd like and search for the most cost-effective way to acquire it. If you don't happen to live in either Karachi or the capitol city of Islamabad (a problem we'll address later) your options will be extremely limited. You can use auction sites such as eBay to purchase quality new and used equipment at discount prices from anywhere in the world.

    2

Go where the action is. There is not much work for a professional photographer in the rural areas of the country. To get work you will need to relocate to either Islamabad or Karachi. With over 12 million people, Karachi is by far the hub of the fashion, media and entertainment industries, while Islamabad (population less than 2 million) is the birthplace of political stories and events. Whether your interests lie in commercial, fashion or news photography, taking up residency in one of the two major metropolitan areas is a must.

    3

Shoot for free and shoot a lot. While your goal is to be paid for your work, you can't get a job without photos and you can't get better without practice. In the free time you have between whatever you are currently doing to pay the bills and studying your prospective new career, try to photograph as many events and feature shots as possible, thereby honing your craft and building the portfolio you will need to land a steady job.

    4

Begin submitting your best photos to local newspapers and magazines. Two major papers that accept submitted photographs are DAWN--the leading English language newspaper in Karachi--and THE DAILY JASARAT. Although the papers do not always pay for submitted photos, they often do, and that is one of the best ways to establish yourself as a competent and dependable photographer.

    5

If you are not interested in news photography, apply for an internship at an established gallery or photo house. Two galleries that work with interns are White Star Photo and Karachi Digital Color Lab and Studio.

Disadvantages of Telephoto Lenses

Telephoto lenses work for sports, nature or wildlife photography because they allow you to get much closer to your subject. If you won't be shooting these kinds of subjects, however, the features that make a telephoto lens work for sports and nature photography can work against you, and the lens might actually inhibit your ability to take good pictures.

Depth of Field

Because telephoto lenses have such long focal lengths, often 200 mm or longer, the depth of field you can achieve with them is drastically lower than with a standard or wide-angle lens. This means that only the subject will appear in focus, while most of the foreground and background will be blurry. This low depth of field can make the subject appear isolated in the image and can also compress the space between the foreground and background, making the image look two-dimensional. You might have observed this effect in television coverage of baseball games; the extreme telephoto lenses used to film the pitcher make the distance between the pitcher's mound and the batter look much shorter than the 60 feet 6 inches it actually is.

Perspective

A telephoto lens has a much narrower perspective than both the human eye and other lenses. This narrow perspective drastically limits the amount of a scene or subject you can include in your picture. If you are shooting landscapes, cityscapes, or interiors, this could be frustrating.

Portability

Telephoto lenses are more cumbersome than standard or wide-angle lenses, and carrying them can be difficult while traveling or attending crowded events. Super telephoto lenses can weigh 10 to 12 lbs. (5 to 6 kg). Although you can sometimes support medium telephoto lenses with your hand, super telephoto lenses almost always require steady support of some kind, such as a tripod or a monopod. This support requirement makes spontaneous shooting difficult.

Expense

Telephoto lenses are often much more expensive than standard lenses (up to several hundred dollars more for an entry-level model), giving you one final reason not to buy one unless you want to do sports or nature photography.

Best Photographer Jobs

Photographers have the kind of glamorous jobs many people dream about. There's hard work, to be sure, but photographers have ever-changing workplaces, meet a wide variety of people and can use their wits, talent and skill to make the ordinary into art. They can do a variety of things that meet their interests and abilities. They can have great jobs.

News

For frequent, sometimes nerve-racking, excitement, photographers who work for newspapers and magazines have it made. Their assignments change from day to day and sometimes minute to minute. They can take a photo of a kindergarten class on the playground, then be whisked off to photograph a politician or maybe see up close the tragedy of a fire, all in the same day. While they get some assignments related to preplanned stories, they also are free to find their own subjects for what are called enterprise shots, and they must race to breaking news stories. A part of their job is to size and tone the photos, along with cataloging them, and they also get to see their work displayed on the front or inside pages of their newspapers every day. They know their work is seen daily by thousands of people.

Glamour

Being a glamour photographer also has its advantages. These professionals shoot fashion and other models for magazines and advertising campaigns. They are highly paid, work with beautiful people and are prized for their abilities to capture art on film. They shoot many sessions in studios, but they also travel the world for location shoots and fashion shows.

Products and Architecture

For a more subdued professional, there is the world of product and architectural photography. These artists are charged with bringing to life inanimate objects such as buildings, sculptures and even margarine, candles or Spam. They are paid to use their imaginations to create enticing photos of things most people walk by without noticing. It's their job to get people to notice.

Artists

Art photographers can explore their own passions, as Ansel Adams did with Yosemite National Park, and get people to admire their work. Such photographers, if they are not independently wealthy, must rely on art grants, gallery exhibitions, photo sales and book deals to make a living.

Celebrity

Paparazzi may be hated by celebrities sometimes, but these photographers who take candid photos of celebrities are passionate about their jobs. While most pros don't think very much of paparazzi, those who do the work share in some of the spotlight of their subjects, can be paid a lot of money and get to see their best shots published around the world. The job entails waiting endless hours for celebrities to appear, and even the risk of being punched or otherwise abused by their subjects. Most are not on the staff of magazines or newspapers, but work freelance. Those who get the shots people want to see can expect big paychecks.

How to Photograph a Trip to Bruges

How to Photograph a Trip to Bruges

Bruges is an ancient Flemish city located in the Northeastern part of Belgium. From the earliest of times, Bruges was an important port city; however, in the early 11th century the channel connecting the harbor to sea began to silt over. Ship traffic began to bypass Bruges and travel to Antwerp in the east, which had a better harbor. The population and importance of Bruges began to decline, although, today, Bruges is vibrant and historic-and since it escaped the war bombings that damaged Antwerp and Brussels-it retains its medieval charm. The managers of the development have kept the old city clear of new construction and have taken great care in restoring and maintaining the culture of the city. It is sometimes called the "Venice of the North"-since it is a city connected by canals. In this article I will focus on photographing some of my favorite places in Bruges-that may not always be included in the tourist packet.

Instructions

    1

Look up! A lot of the buildings in ancient Bruges were guild buildings. The guilds were very powerful in pre-industrial society. The guild houses in Bruges, like those in Amsterdam and Antwerp, are adorned with gold statues of incredible detail and workmanship. You should also take time to see the Gothic Hall, which has one of the most amazing ceilings ever created.

    2
    Pump House

You can see wonderful churches and towers, but the architecture of even the most common place is wonderful. Pictured is an old pump house near the Miniwater section of Bruges. From the exterior you might think it was the house of a noble, but inside the pumps still work to help control the levels in the canals.

    3
    Beguinage

This image is the entrance to The Beguinage in Bruges. Americans love to take pictures of the entry, since the date of its dedication is important in American history. A Bguinage is a collection of small buildings used by Beguines for prayer and healing the sick. Beguines are sisters of the Roman Catholic Church that have dedicated themselves to healing the sick.

    4
    Prayer

If the gate is open, you may enter the Beguinage, which is a rare treat. Outside the world is drinking beer and eating chocolate, but inside, the central court is covered with ancient trees. There is a small, simple church and other private spots to pray, like the one pictured.

    5
    Canals

When you are tired of walking, take a canal ride. It is a great way to see the architecture of the city, and most tour guides are well informed on the history of the area. Take the boat ride early in your visit, since it will give you a sense of where to go. Think of it as a photo-scouting mission.

    6
    Cafe Plaza

The cafes in Bruges are some of the best, and if you like beer, you must drink some of the 2,400 branded Belgium beers. One of the best is brewed right in Bruges and has been since the 1600s. Visit the ancient Straffe Hendrik Brewery and take the tour. Stop in the bar at the end of the tour and cash in your free tickets to enjoy one on the best brews on the planet (see Resources below).

    7

Even the doorways in Bruges take on architectural interest. The street in this image has a doorway. A long time ago, the small houses on the street were part of another Beguinage. When the town was restored, the tiny little houses were converted to inexpensive housing for retired workers.

    8

Bruges has a great collection of gardens and fountains. This little garden in the photo is near the Miniwater. Near here you can also hire horse and carriage rides, which is yet another way to ease your feet and see the sights. Trust me, walking 8 hours on cobblestones will take it out of you.

    9
    Churches and Towers

Don't forget to take the postcard pictures of churches and towers. There are a few of both, and each one is more picturesque than the next. The belfry of Bruges, or Belfort, is a medieval bell tower in the historical center of the town. It was featured in the movie, "In Bruges," but has recently been closed to the public. The Church of our Lady is probably the most famous church. Inside is the famous Michelangelo painting, "Mother and Child."
