How to Restore Archive Photos

How to Restore Archive Photos

Archive photos, like any old photographs, can become the victim of time, as the photo fades, becomes discolored and gathers dust and scratches. The dust and debris can be removed manually, however, to correct the color and quality of the photo you will have to scan the photo to bring it onto your computer where you can edit it digitally. By combining the right restoration tools, with some simple digital editing techniques you can restore your archive photos to their former glory in no time at all.

Instructions

    1

Remove any dust and debris from the surface of your archive photo. Gently wipe the photo from corner to corner with a soft brush or cleaning cloth.

    2

Turn your scanner on and place your photo image side down on the scanning glass. Align the photo with the corner of the scanner before closing the lid of the scanner.

    3

Adjust the settings on your scanner. If you have the option between color and grayscale, then select color by pressing the corresponding button. Scan your images at 300 dpi and choose where on your computer you want them to be saved.

    4

Click "Scan" or press the scan button on your scanner to scan the image. Allow the scan to complete before clicking "File" then "Save" to save the scanned photo to your computer.

    5

Run your image editing software such as Windows Live Photo Gallery, Photoshop or GIMP by double clicking on the desktop icon.

    6

Open your scanned photo in your selected program by clicking "File" then "Open" and selecting your image from the drop-down menu.

    7

Adjust the lighting on your archive photo. Open the adjustments panel, then increase the brightness, contrast and saturation levels of your photograph by dragging the marker on the slider bar from the left side to the right.

    8

Correct the color levels in your photograph by using the "Adjust Color Toot" in Windows Live Photo Gallery or by using the "Levels" tool in Photoshop. Adjust the slider bars to change the temperature and tint of the photograph. Alter the position of the saturation marker on individual colors to restore faded colors.

    9

Click "Filter" and then select "Dust and Scratches" from the drop down menu in Photoshop to clean specks and scratches from your photo. Use the "Sharpen" tool to remove blur from the image by moving the marker from left to right on the slider.

    10

Admire your restored photograph. Notice the difference in image quality between the original scan and your restored image. Repeat the process for any further archive photos.

How to Become a Photographer in Canada

Becoming a photographer in Canada can be rather easy. You will need to drive to be able to compete against many other photographers that are just as talented. However, as long as you are willing to put in the hours, love the work and be the best you can be at taking photographs then you should do rather well in Canada.

Instructions

    1

Attend a photography school. Canada has several and there are number of them in Toronto such as the Academy of Design and Technology and Toronto School of Photography. Vancouver Photography and Montreal Photography School are two others to think about. They will help you understand various kinds of lighting for different types of pictures.

    2

Decide what kind of photographer you want to be. Decide if you should specialize in weddings, fashion, or pets. This will determine what you should focus on and will help you figure out how to advertise when opening your own company.

    3

Establish a professional appearance and attitude. As long as you make the people you are photographing comfortable by giving them the impression you know what you are doing then you can get very good shots. For example, if you are photographing a wedding and you come dressed in very casual clothing, this will come across as though you don't know what you are doing. The people at the wedding, especially the bride and groom, will feel uneasy about how good the pictures will come out.

    4

Develop a portfolio of your work. Always have samples that you can show studios that you would like to work for or individuals that will contract you out. If you don't have samples of how good your work is then the person hiring you will have no idea how good you are.

    5

Find work with a small photography studio. With a small studio you will be able to get firsthand training and learn what to expect when starting your own studio. You can offer part-time services for free if they seem reluctant to hire you. Once they see your work then they may decide to hire you. You can eventually move onto a larger studio. Getting experience with other companies is vital in order to develop a successful studio.

    6

Have business sense. Be able to understand how to run a business once you go on your own. You can also become a freelance photographer but you will need to understand how important it is to be on time and look professional. Be creative and copyright your photographs.

How Can I Make Andy Warhol Pop Art?

How Can I Make Andy Warhol Pop Art?

Andy Warhol, a leading American artist known for his creation of the style known as pop art, has been inspiring copy cats for generations. Now, with tools such as Photoshop, it's simple to create your own Andy Warhol-inspired pop art with personal photographs. Virtually any photograph can be transformed into a pop art masterpiece in a few easy steps, providing you with a new way to display and show off your favorite snapshots and memories.

Instructions

    1

Select the first photo you'd like to use for your Warhol project. Duplicate the background layer by clicking on it and dragging the background icon to the bottom of the layer window. Rename the layer "picture." Create a new layer and select white. Drag it below the "picture" layer and name it "background." You can then delete your original background.

    2

Crop out anything you do not want in your photo, such as furniture, background scenery, etc. Warhol pop art looks best with an isolated, focal image rather than a scene scape or cluttered photograph. Using the "picture" layer, use Photoshop's pen tool. Press Ctrl+Shift+U to desaturate the photo. Adjust the contrast or anything else you want to do to make the picture more dramatic. Play around with it to get the look you want.

    3

Using the Photoshop filters, select the Cutout filter to the "picture" layer with the settings at 4, 2 and 2. Adjust the levels until the photograph is black, gray and white. Repeat this process again, applying the Cutout filter. This time, the settings should be 4, 4 and 2. If you do not like those numbered settings, play around to get the defined edges and shading you desire. Save your photo.

    4

Select the Duplicate Layer setting in Photoshop, repeating until you have four pairs of the photograph. Click on the Layer Thumbnail and select a color for "bg1". You can use an Andy Warhol picture off of the Internet as a color guide if you need it. Create a new layer in frame one's set and rename it. Place the layer between your two already present layers and then choose Load Selection. Play with different color combinations and layering links until you get exactly the look you want.
