Family portraits are a staple for the holidays with Christmas cards being sent out. Because your family photo is often seen by a lot of people, you want to look your best and have your family look good together as a whole. What you wear will have a big effect on the overall picture as well as your individual appearance. Planning the family wardrobe ahead of time is a must. Do not let everyone just toss on whatever they feel like that day.
Same Styles
Dress in similar style clothing such as all in polo shirts and casual pants or all in tropical attire. You can even have everyone wear the same thing but in different colors. All in the same polo shirt for example, but in red, green, purple and yellow. General ideas such as shorts and T-shirts also works well as long as the clothes are solid (no prints or logos).
Similiar Tones
Choose clothing all the same general color. Exact colors aren't necessary, just the same tone. Another idea is to choose two similar colors such as red and pink then have the guys wear red tones and the gals wear pink tones.

Plan a funny family photo in costumes. These are great for humorous Christmas cards or photo party invitations. Dress up in Halloween costumes as superheros, nerds, cops and robbers or like your pets. Have fun with the shoot and strike a couple silly poses, you might hit that just perfect one and capture a priceless moment.
