How to Convert a Slide to a Picture

How to Convert a Slide to a Picture

At one time if you wanted to convert a slide to a picture or photograph, you would take the slide to the photo developer and have them make a print. Today you can convert your own slides to a picture, provided you have a scanner designed to scan slides. Many affordable desktop scanners have slide and negative attachments. If yours is one, then you can convert your slides to a digital image which can be printed out on photo-quality paper.

Instructions

    1

Open the lid of the scanner and insert the slide in the slide and negative slot. The scanner in the photograph is designed in this manner, although some scanners have a separate slide scanning attachment. When inserting the slide, the side laying on the glass will be the back of the slide, or the side that typically has no writing on its cardboard frame. If you insert the image the wrong way, you will create a mirror image. For example, on the slide being scanned in our picture, there is writing on the baseball cap. If we turn the slide in the other direction, the finished picture will have a baseball cap with reversed writing.

    2

Close the lid to the scanner and push the button that tells the machine you are scanning a negative or slide. On the scanner in the picture, this button has an icon that looks like a slide and film.

    3

Choose to scan a slide in the menu that pops up. If you were scanning a picture or negative, you would make a different choice.

    4

Click the option to preview your image before scanning. If your scanner has this option, check this so you can position your scanning border if necessary.

    5

Reposition your scanning border if necessary. There should be dotted lines around the area to be scanned. If you want to enlarge or reduce that area, pull the corners in or out using your cursor.

    6

Click the Accept or scanning command to continue with the scan.

    7

Choose to scan additional negatives, or stop scanning. Your new digital image will be saved to a file on your computer.

    8

Open the digital image in a graphics editing program to print a picture.

    9

Choose a Print Preview option, if it is available on your graphics program. In the photograph we are using Photoshop, which allows us to choose the size of the picture. When printing, use photo-quality paper for best results.

How to Become a Professional Photographer

Becoming a professional photographer can be difficult. It takes a lot of practice, time and consideration to make a decent living as a photographer. No matter if you want to be a portrait photographer, photojournalist or stock photography specialist, here are the basic steps to becoming a professional.

Instructions

    1

Study how to take good photographs. Read books from the library, take classes and search online forums for tips. Photography Tips and Tricks and Digital Photography School are good blogs and forums to study. As for a recommended book, "Master Guide for Professional Photographers" is good for those wanting expert advice.

    2

Practice taking photos of your family and friends. Shoot everything you can. Use the best photos to make a portfolio to show clients and galleries. Your portfolio should have examples that show a wide range of your talents. For example, you should include outdoor photos, photos of people with props, photos of people in a studio setting and more.

    3

Have business cards printed with your best photo as an illustration. Display your best photographs on your personal website. Make sure the site includes your contact information and a way for visitors to join your mailing list.

    4

Use your portfolio, website and business cards to show others your work. Network as much as possible, both in person and on the Internet. Opportunities will only come your way if you put your work out for the world to see.

    5

Keep in mind that networking will eventually pay off and you will start to get paying clients.

How to Build a Light Box for Digital Photography

How to Build a Light Box for Digital Photography

A light box, also referred to as a whitebox, softbo, or light tent is a self-contained miniature photo studio used for small object or macro photography. Light boxes are most often used for product photography, food photography or macro photography such as insect photography. The purpose of the box is to naturally illuminate an object without harsh beams or shadows due to flash lighting or direct sun.

Instructions

    1

Create or start with an already constructed five-sided box. If you have a suitable cardboard box that you can begin with, skip this step. If you do not have a box, you will need to create one out of cardboard or white foam board. To construct a box, cut five equal sides at least 2 feet in length. Use masking, packaging or duct tape to join the seems on all sides and corners on the outside of the box. If you are using a cardboard box that isn't white, line the entire inside of the box (floor, ceiling and walls) with white paper or white poster board.

    2

Cut a square hole into the top of the box about 5 inches by 5 inches. Cover the hole with semi-sheer material such as a folded white fabric, a few sheets of layered white printer paper or stretched white tissue paper. Any material that will soften and refract a light that is shone through it will work. If using fabric, taping is not necessary. If using a paper product, tape down in order to keep in place.

    3

Insert a seamless backdrop. A white poster board works best for the backdrop as it is bendable yet completely opaque. If your box is on the slightly smaller size, you will need to cut the poster board to a width that will fit inside of the box without it puckering. Place the poster board inside the box and tape the top edge to the back wall of the box at least half way up. The runner (amount of board that drapes and runs along the floor of the box) should be longer than the amount of board that is vertical along the back. The board should bend in a soft arc over the bottom seam (where the back wall meets the floor) in order to disguise it.

    4

Place two lamps fitted with full spectrum daylight bulbs at the opening of the box pointed inward and down. Place a third light above the cut and covered opening on the top of the box. Make sure you use daylight bulbs or your light box will be filled with an unnatural hue.

    5

Situate your object inside of the box and set up your camera. As a light box is generally used for closeups of small subjects (macro photography), using a tripod will help steady your camera and prevent blur even though you will be using a fast shutter speed. When shooting, play around with the lights. Move them, remove them or insert bouncing screens (white cardboard) into the box at a front-right or left angle to the object to experiment.
