How Does a Photo Enlarger Work?

How Does a Photo Enlarger Work?

Types of Photographic Enlargers

There are two primary types of photographic enlargers: condenser and diffusion. While condenser enlargers use one or more lenses to concentrate light on the negative, diffusion enlargers take unfocused light and disseminate it on the negative. Condenser enlargers create higher contrast images and shorter exposure times, and diffusion enlargers do the opposite. Aside from the way light is distributed over the negative, most enlargers work in the same basic ways.

External Features

    An enlarger's head.

Each enlarger is controlled by a timer to turn the light bulb inside on and off. The enlarger head (see image) moves up and down a supporting column. Some enlargers have a double column support system and some have a single column, depending on the brand and specific functions. The head can move up and down the column, creating larger and smaller images (the lower the head, the smaller the image). The column rests on the baseboard, where an easel can be placed to aid in printing.

The Negative, Focusing, and the Lens

The negative is placed in a negative carrier inside the enlarger's head. Focusing knobs on the side fine-tune the distance between the negative and the enlarger's lens to make the image crisp and clear (this distance is enclosed with bellows). The lens has an aperture just like a camera; the smaller the aperture number, the larger the amount of light that passes through. More light passing through the enlarger typically means a shorter exposure time, while less light means a longer exposure time. After an image passes through the lens, it can also pass through filters that adjust contrast. All these individual elements in an enlarger come together to print photographic images.
