About Vintage Glamour Photography

Vintage glamour photography is a way of taking pictures that makes the subjects of the photographs appear as if they were movie stars or pin-up models from the past. The pictures are dramatic and contain plenty of contrast. Vintage glamour photographs are created with special lighting, model posing, vintage wardrobe and special makeup.

Lighting

Most vintage glamour photography is done in a studio since it requires special lighting. A common characteristic of vintage glamour photographs is a shadow beneath the nose shaped like a butterfly. This requires a strong, undiffused key light shining at a high angle. The key light must line up with the model's nose and shine down on her. This makes the model appear as if she is in the spotlight. Two fill lights should also shine on the model. They are not as bright as the key light so they diminish harsh shadows without removing the contrast. Since some parts of the model are lit more than other parts, an illusion of depth and rounding is created on her features. One fill light goes on the opposite side and below the camera at a low angle. The other is above the camera shining down on the model. A backlight shines on the back of the model's head to separate her from the background.

Black and White

Many photographers choose to shoot in black and white to produce a stark, elegant or timeless quality. This requires some lighting adjustments. The focus should be on dramatic contrast. Fill lights should shine at one third the key light intensity to show the contours of the face. Additional lights shining across the background can cast hard shadows that add depth to black and white glamour photographs.

Vaseline Lighting

Vaseline lighting is another popular form of vintage glamour photography. It is called Vaseline lighting because it appears as if Vaseline is smeared on the camera lens. Everything is fuzzy and soft in the pictures. This is favored by models who want to hide wrinkles and imperfections in their skin. It also creates an air of mystery and a dreamlike quality. To produce this effect, every light must be diffused. They can either be bounced off reflectors or white walls, or shined through a diffusing substance. Glamour photographers often use sheets, spun glass gels or semi transparent filters. Lace, nylon and mesh placed over the lights can produce a boudoir effect. The camera must also be set for soft focus with little depth of field.

Posing

A vintage glamour model must look like a movie star of the Golden Age. Models rarely looked straight into the camera. Most of the time they looked to the side and up with a longing or mysterious expression. Looking up also makes the face and jawline more attractive. Poses are dramatic with hands placed by the face or bodies curved in a reclining position. Vintage glamour photography is not about natural appearances. Everything should be oddly posed to attract the attention of the eye. Avoid straight lines and flat surfaces.

Wardrobe & Make Up

Vintage glamour photography is about the model, not the wardrobe. Clothing should be glamorous but minimal. Black and white clothing always works well, especially if you are shooting in black and white. Make up must be dramatic and contain a lot of contrast. Avoid using a lot of different colors. The glamour lighting will wash it out anyway. Very red lips and cheeks will make them prominent in glamour pictures. Skin make-up should be matte to absorb the hard light. Eye make-up should make the eyes appear as big as possible. Hair should be simple, preferably in the style of the time period you are attempting to reproduce.

How to Make Black & White Photos With One Color

How to Make Black & White Photos With One Color

Photographic effects can alter the meaning of an image, or add a new layer of depth to a piece. There are several popular photographic effects, but selective color editing is one of the most recognizable. This is the process in which a photograph is changed into black and white, leaving only one color or object in color, or an already black and white photograph is modified to include a color.

Instructions

    1

Upload your photograph or scan it and save it as a jpeg or jpg, so that it can be opened in Adobe Photoshop.

    2

Decide which area you would like to remain in color. If your photo is high contrast enough, you can use the magic wand tool and click on the area to select it. If the image has a lot of shading or a lot of ambiguous blacks, the magic wand may not work. In this case, the magnetic lasso tool, with which you manually circle the selection area, will be the best tool to use.

    3

Invert the selected area by clicking select>inverse. This will highlight everything except your previously chosen color area.

    4

Convert the rest of the image to black and white by selecting image>adjustments>black and white or gray scale.

    5

Add color. If your image was already black and white and you wanted to add color to a selected area, use the magic wand or magnetic lasso and then go to image>adjustments>hue/saturation. This will change the subtle levels of gray in the selection in a more realistic fashion than using paint bucket, which will be too bold and which will look fake.

About Dramatic Black & White Photography

About Dramatic Black & White Photography

Black and white photography has almost been forgotten in this age of high-definition digital color photography. However, black and white photography still has a place in the lives of both the budding photographer and the viewer.

Famous Photographers

Some of the most famous photographers took black and white photographs. Among them were Ansel Adams and Alfred Steiglitz, according to Pixi Port, an online fine art photography gallery.

Potential

Photography students learn to take photos by taking black and white pictures. They do this because the process of taking pictures, developing film and looking at enlargements of the work teaches a photographer to spot the problem areas. It also promotes a new way of seeing things.

Effects

In terms of dramatic photography, black and white photos force the viewer to notice elements in the photograph that he wouldn't otherwise, according to the Nature Photography Central website. In this case, the medium of black and white photography brings certain elements into sharper focus.

Mood

According to the Kodak website, when the color element is taken away from a photo, light plays a bigger role and the black and white format intensifies this. The same scene photographed under different light conveys a different mood.

Legacy

Dramatic black and white photography also influenced films. Film noir developed after World War II. The films were shot in black and white often with little light, which heightened the tension that already existed in the story.

How to Photograph Dew Drops

How to Photograph Dew Drops

Taking photographs of small objects with digital cameras requires a special lens setting known as macro. Point-and-click digital cameras have a macro mode setting built into the camera. DSLR cameras require a special macro lens for taking images of small objects. Learn how to set up and use the macro function on your digital camera to take pictures of dew drops on grass or leaves in the morning.

Instructions

    1

Place your point-and-click digital camera in macro mode or attach a macro lens to a DSLR camera. Macro mode point and click cameras mimics a macro lens on a DSLR camera and allows you to take close-up photographs of small objects, such as dew drops on grass. The standard symbol for macro mode on cameras is a picture of a flower. Many point-and-click cameras have a dedicated button for macro mode, which is marked with the flower symbol.

    2

Place the camera on a tripod or other sturdy location to minimize camera shake when taking the photograph. Camera shake creates a blur in your photograph, which is especially evident when taking photographs of small objects.

    3

Attach a remote control shutter release to the camera or set the self timer. Both the remote control shutter release and the self timer minimize camera shake by allowing you to keep your hands off of the camera when the shutter releases.

    4

Frame the dew drop or drops using the viewfinder and zoom in or out as desired. DSLR camera users can tweak the focus by placing the camera and lens in "Manual" mode and twisting the focus ring on the lens as needed.

    5

Press the shutter button on the camera and remove your hands so you don't cause any camera shake when the shutter releases, or press the shutter button on your remote control, if you have one.
