Family Portrait Tips

Family Portrait Tips

Family portraits are a visible piece of your family history, and creating a portrait you will treasure for years to come isn't as simple as "say cheese." Thorough preparation is necessary to ensure your photos are engaging and capture the true essence of your family. Here are some family portrait tips to ensure your shoot results in great images.

Choosing a Photographer

Your photographer should make you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. A face-to-face consultation prior to signing any contracts is better than judging chemistry on a phone call.
Ask to see examples of prior work, and check at least three references from past customers. Your photographer should be fully insured and in good standing with the Better Business Bureau.

Selecting a Setting

A simple backdrop in a studio works well for a formal portrait. If you want something more casual or to show more of your family's personality, the sky's the limit. You can hold the photo shoot in your home, a local park, a favorite vacation spot or anywhere else that captures your imagination.

Sometimes the most striking family portraits are taken in the most unusual settings. Take a cue from a hot trend in engagement photography and shoot in an unexpected environment: in front of a brightly-colored building downtown, near some graffiti in an alley, on the Ferris wheel at a local carnival, or in an antique car.

What to Wear

Coordinated outfits in a family portrait.

Coordinate, but don't match. Avoid logos, busy patterns and trends that will look dated in years to come. Wear colors that mesh well together but do not compete for attention. Various shades of blue, pastels, or white works well. Avoid red as the focus will be on the clothing instead of your faces.

How to Relax

    Relaxed family portrait.

Everyone in your group should be well-fed and rested at the time of your shoot. Get goofy. Jump in the air, lay on the ground, break out some dance moves and just have fun. Afterwards you can go back to the formal poses and be sure everyone will have a genuine smile.

Using Your Photos

In addition to hanging your family portrait on the wall, you can create lots of great artwork with it. Use your photos for holiday and thank you cards, create a family calendar, use them on your family website, or create t-shirts for your next family reunion.
