How to Fade a Photo to Transparent

When photographs are integrated into a larger project, they sometimes are faded on one or more edges so that they appear to disappear smoothly into the background. Digital photo editors create this effect using alpha channels and layer masks. Alpha channels contain up to 256 transparency levels for each pixel. Layer masks designate the portions of an image that should remain opaque and the portions that should become translucent or transparent. The opaque portions of an alpha channel are represented by the color white on the layer mask, while the transparent and translucent portions are represented by black and shades of gray.

Instructions

    1

Import the image into a photo editor.

    2

Add an adjustment layer or duplicate the background layer.

    3

Add a layer mask to the adjustment layer.

    4

Select a gradient tool, then choose a "Background-to-Foreground" or "Black-to-White" gradient.

    5

Click on the layer in the canvas at the point where you want it to become completely transparent. Drag the cursor to the point where you want it to remain completely opaque, then release the mouse.
