Some digital cameras allow you to shoot in what's known as "Raw" mode. A "Raw" photograph is one that contains only the unprocessed, raw information that was recorded when the shot was taken. So it's like a digital negative. In order to fine tune the properties of the photograph, such as white balance, contrast and exposure value, you will need to use your computer and image editing software. Sometimes people say shooting in Raw is only for professionals, but that is a myth. It's really very easy.

Pack a spare memory card or two in your camera bag before setting off for a shoot. Raw files are larger than JPEGs and take up more space, so you'll fill your memory card a bit quicker.
2Find the "Image Quality" subcategory in your camera menus (often under "Shooting Menu") and select the "Raw" option.
3Select one of the "Raw + JPEG" options in the "Image Quality Menu" (which allows you to save two different versions of each image) if you need a quick turnaround for your shots, but would also like to produce higher quality versions later.
4Take your shots as usual, but if saving only "Raw" versions, do not waste time selecting the perfect white balance. This can be adjusted later in your image editing software. When saving both "Raw" and "JPEG" versions of each image, however, do be sure to select the correct white balance because this cannot be adjusted at a later point for the JPEG files.
5Prepare yourself to switch back to an exclusively JPEG image quality setting if you need to start taking shots in rapid succession (of sports or wildlife, for example). Raw files take longer to save to the memory card, which sometimes slows down the rate at which images can be taken and stored.
