If you want to preserve memories of your children without spending money on a professional photographer, take the photos yourself. With digital camera technology, you can take professional-grade portraits of your family right at home--no studio required. When you set up the proper lighting and use the right equipment, taking high-quality portraits of your children is as simple as pointing and shooting--the hardest part may just be getting your kids to sit still.
Instructions
- 1
Find a backdrop. Use either a solid color backdrop for a studio look or an existing backdrop for something more natural. Hang up a freshly washed bed sheet in white, black or a light pastel color if you want a studio-style backdrop. Hang it in an area with natural light, such as your open garage or in front of the door to your patio. For a natural look, choose a solid color background such as a grassy field or a clear, blue sky.
2Dress your child appropriately. Avoid clothing with graphics, designs or words on them--solid colors are the least distracting. If you're photographing multiple children in one shot, refrain from dressing them in the same color or the same outfit. Instead, dress them in colors that complement one another without matching perfectly. For example, dress everyone in cool colors, such as blue, green or pastels.
3Reflect light for indoor shots. Use reflected light instead of using your camera flash or shining a light directly on your subject; this type of lighting is much less harsh and more accurately emulates studio lighting. Use a full-length mirror or a shiny piece of white foam core to bounce natural light onto your subject.
4Photograph your children at eye level to get a clear view. If your child feels uncomfortable, give her a prop to play with, such as a teddy bear or a ball.
5Make your child laugh to get a natural smile. Encourage her not to pose because children may appear unnatural or awkward when posing for photos; she'll look more natural when she's relaxed.
