Pick a simple location with a simple background for your photo shoot. Do this by positioning the person in your portrait directly in front of the camera or by blurring the background later during editing. Remove any unnecessary or confusing objects from the the location you have chosen.
2Shoot in "Raw" mode if possible, an option that some, but not all, high-end digital cameras have. This option gives you the most control later in post production. If your camera does not offer the Raw option, shoot in JPEG.
3Shoot in the lowest ISO possible. Doing so reduces noise, which is difficult to remove from black and white photos.
4Shoot black and white portraits in low contrast situations, meaning days that are overcast or gloomy, for optimum feature and shadow distinction. Since color can no longer be the focal point of your photograph, concentrate on light and shadow to make a good photo.
5Focus on the person's eyes to convey feeling in the photo. The rest -- smiles, frowns, a thoughtful look -- will follow and enhance the photo from there. Many photographers recommend having the person look away from the camera or "into the distance" for the most thought-provoking shot.
