Portrait photography can produce dynamic, expressive images of the human face, but it requires special techniques to produce great photographs. One technique for portrait photography is the use of a reflector, which bounces light, in conjunction with a gobo, which diminishes reflected light. These two pieces of photographic equipment can be used when photographing portraits outdoors, in the forgiving, soft light of outdoor shade. Using gobos and reflectors can be done even by the amateur photographer with the right technique.

Position a gobo directly above the subject's head. This creates shade that softens the shadows falling on the subject's face.
2Position a reflector a few feet below the subject's face.
3Set your camera's white balance to its sunlight setting.
4Take a photograph of the subject's face.
5Review the photograph, noting how much shadow from the gobo and light from the reflector reach the subject's face.
6Adjust the position of the gobo further away for less shadow, or move it closer to the subject for more shadow.
7Move the reflector closer to the subject for more light, or move the reflector away from the subject for less light.
8Experiment with different distances and angles of the gobo and reflector, using the gobo above and the reflector below the subject as your general rule.
