How to Make a Halloween Picture

How to Make a Halloween Picture

Staging a photo shoot for Halloween can be a great way to keep older children and teens busy -- and out of trouble -- before trick-or-treating. While a themed backdrop enhances the mood it is not a necessary expense. Just don your favorite costume and pose. Be sure to use colored lights and a lamp to eliminate the need for extensive digital enhancement.

Instructions

    1

Set up a Halloween- or fall-themed backdrop. Surround a chair with pumpkins and hay. Use lawn ornaments such as tombstones and fake skeletons to adorn the ground. Pin a dark, matte black cloth to the wall behind the backdrop; any color may be used but black absorbs light and makes the scene look more eerie.

    2

Don a costume. Pay attention to details such as props; for example., if you are a cat don't forget your whiskers.

    3

Wear make-up. Finish your look with a light powder coat to dull the shine. Apply petroleum jelly to lips, wounds and dripping fluids to add shine.

    4

Light the scene. Place a positionable floor lamp or single photography lamp 6 feet to 10 feet from the scene at or below the eye level of the subject; under-lighting enhances skin texture. Use colored light-bulbs or filters to add character and ambiance. A green light, for example, will make green ogre make-up, and any skin you missed, seem greener.

    5

Hold a sheet between the light source and the subject to soften the light for glamor shots of fairies, princes and the like.

    6

Use a tripod; this simple device can help you to produce sharper images, maximizing the potential of your camera.

    7

Take a test shot of your subject from different angles. View these on a large screen. Make adjustments to the setting and costume as necessary.

    8

Capture 15 to 50 shots of each subject; taking multiple pictures increases your odds of having a good shot.
