Photo Project Grants

There are numerous photo project grants, and many photography project grants accept international submissions from photographers around the world. These grants may award photographers based on project proposals, project samples or existing work. Photography project grants provide photographers with funding to support his project's production, distribution and promotion. Grant money for photography projects may apply to new, completed or ongoing photography projects. Photo project grants include grants for photojournalism and editorial projects, emerging artist projects and humanistic photo projects. Other grant contests accept submissions for an undefined or broad range of photographic categories.

Photojournalism and Editorial

    Photojournalism, editorial and documentary photography projects receive photography project grants from various organizations, including nonprofit organizations, private foundations and large photography enterprises. The grants award photojournalistic projects and projects that support photojournalism. Some top photojournalistic grant awards include the Aftermath Project, Alexia Foundation professional photographer and photojournalist student, Howard Chapnick, Pierre and Alaxandra Boulat grant, Getty Images professional, Nikon Social Photo reportage and the OSI project distribution grants. These grant awards for photojournalistic projects range from $5,000 to $30,000.

Emerging Artists

    Some grants award artists that demonstrate special perspectives and receive positive reactions from the photography community. These grants support photography projects based on loosely defined artistic or creative qualities to up-and-coming photographers. For example, Burn Magazine and the Humble Arts Foundation offer awards for personal photography projects, special artistic perspectives and fine art photography projects around the world. The grant awards range from $1,000 to $15,000.

Humanistic

    Humanistic photography grants support photography projects that promote positive change and report on social issues and individuals. Two popular humanistic photography grant organizations include Getty images and the Smith Foundation. Getty awards Grants for Good and the Smith Foundation supports various humanistic reportage endeavors. Other humanistic grants award photographers that represent a demographic such as the Women In Photography Lightside project grant for female photographers. Humanistic grants range from $1,500 to $20,000.

Mixed Submission

    Some grant contests accept submissions for projects in multiple photography genres. These grants may accept submissions for category awards such as general photographic excellence, photographic essay, photojournalism and digital media. Other multi-genre grants award project submissions on a case-by-case basis. National Geographic magazine, the Open Society Institute and the Humble Foundation offer mixes-genre photo project grant awards.
