How to Take a Portrait in Fluorescent Lighting

How to Take a Portrait in Fluorescent Lighting

While the California Energy Commission notes that fluorescent lighting can reduce energy use and save money on electric bills, it's not typically recommended for taking portraits because it can skew coloring. Fluorescent bulbs emit blue and green light but are deficient in red, causing a green tint effect. This shouldn't turn you away from taking indoor portraits; fluorescent lighting can also create a distinct contrast of brightness and dark shadows that gives photos a dramatic appeal once the offset color is balanced.

Instructions

    1

Turn your flash off. The flash has a tendency to overexpose your subject and distort colors, but as long as she's effectively lighted, you shouldn't need to use it. Instead, take advantage of the fact that fluorescent lighting often appears brighter than other photography lighting.

    2

Automatically adjust the white balance setting on your camera. While many cameras have different wording for white balance settings, you'll be looking to set the camera to "indoor" or "fluorescent."

    3

Attach a fluorescent (FL) filter to your lens if you have one. While this filter isn't necessary, it is used to correct the green tone of fluorescent lighting and can improve your color balance. The downside is that these filters can be expensive.

    4

Manually white balance your camera by focusing on a blank, white sheet of paper. This "tells" your camera what white is and helps it to adjust the color tones of your portrait.

    5

Focus on the subject of your portrait and shoot.

How to Do Photography That Looks Like Dolce & Gabbana

The designer label Dolce & Gabbana was started by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbano in 1982. Based in Italy, the haute fashion label is known for being edgy. The label is also noted for the photographs that portray its fashions. The photography is generally dramatic, both through the models and the techniques used by the photographers. Achieving a similar look is possible, even if you do not have celebrities modeling for you.

Instructions

    1

Find at least one model who is willing to do the photo shoot. Preferably, you should have two or three. The models should be willing to wear bold outfits and makeup.

    2

Look through photographs of Dolce & Gabbana ads for prop and model inspiration. This should give you ideas for hair and makeup and possible setups for the shoot.

    3

Choose a scenario you would like to capture through your photography. A lot of the photographs used by Dolce & Gabbana feature multiple people in dramatic poses. Almost none of the photography has people smiling. Think of a storyline you want to re-create visually. Prepare your model(s) to act it out as you photograph.

    4

Have your model(s) apply makeup -- the more dramatic, the better. Heavy eyeliner, a lot of concealer and bold lip color are common in Dolce & Gabbana photographs. Don't be afraid to overdo these things while experimenting with eyelid and cheek colors. Hair should be styled, but not overdone. Two common styles amongst Dolce & Gabbana models is hair that is blow-dried and loosely curled, or hair that is pulled back tightly.

    5

Choose a wardrobe for your model(s) to wear. Dolce & Gabbana generally features a new line through photo shoots, so the outfits should be similar in style.

    6

Prepare the set you will be using. This could be done in any number of spaces, including your studio, a friend's house or outside. After determining a theme, collect and set up the props.

    7

Set up your lighting equipment. Dolce & Gabbana uses professional photographers who go to great lengths to get the lighting perfect. Bright, even lighting of the model's face is frequently seen in the photography used by Dolce & Gabbana.

    8

Ensure that your camera is set up for the shoot. There are several ways you can do this. You may want to shoot your photos in a neutral setup and do all of the color effects in post-processing. If this is the case, set your camera as you normally would for any photo shoot. If you are not using a camera that allows you to control white balance and exposure, you will need to do most of the work in post-processing.

If you can control your settings, experiment with the white balance. Several Dolce & Gabbana photo shoots have a tint of blue or yellow. Do this by selecting the white balance setting on your camera and choosing the manual option. Move the color balance meter to a blue or green area. If you don't have this option, select warm lighting to get the camera to compensate with blue.

Try slightly over exposing some of the photographs. Some of the photography used by Dolce & Gabbana is slightly over-exposed. If you are nervous about doing this on your camera, rest-assured that the results can be achieved in post-processing.

    9

Edit your photos. If you weren't able to do a lot with your camera, now is the time to transform your photographs. Experiment with different styles and effects. Try changing some of your photographs into high-contrasted black and white photography. Try adding a yellow or blue filter. Look at other Dolce & Gabbana photographs for more ideas on how to finish your artwork.

Biography of Jerry Uelsmann

Biography of Jerry Uelsmann

Jerry Uelsmann is a photographer from Detroit, Michigan. He was born on June 11, 1934, and suffered from poor grades throughout his school life. After working as a wedding photographer, he obtained a degree from Rochester Institute of Technology and a master's from Indiana University. Uelsmann began his teaching career at the University of Florida in 1960, where he developed his unique styles. His first solo show was at the Museum of Modern Art in 1967.

Features

Jerry Uelsmann's technique relies heavily on the concept of composite photography. He merges multiple negatives into one image using various darkroom tools and advanced printing technology.

Identification

Unlike other photographers doing similar work, Uelsmann's develops a final image that deals with allegorical commentary and surrealist imagery. One of his favorite subjects is the impossible and unfathomable.

Considerations

Uelsmann primarily uses traditional photographic methods. He uses a number of different enlargers and analog equipment to get the desired effects in his prints. Uelsmann says that he has no intention of switching to digital cameras.

Significance

Jerry Uelsmann lives off of grants from artistic cooperatives and colleges rather than off of a regular commercial salary. His photographs routinely fetch thousands of dollars each at auctions.

Fun Fact

Examples of his photography can be seen on the opening credits of "The Outer Limits" from 1995 and the 2003 album "Train of Thought" from the progressive metal band Dream Theater.
