How to Take a Portrait in Fluorescent Lighting

How to Take a Portrait in Fluorescent Lighting

While the California Energy Commission notes that fluorescent lighting can reduce energy use and save money on electric bills, it's not typically recommended for taking portraits because it can skew coloring. Fluorescent bulbs emit blue and green light but are deficient in red, causing a green tint effect. This shouldn't turn you away from taking indoor portraits; fluorescent lighting can also create a distinct contrast of brightness and dark shadows that gives photos a dramatic appeal once the offset color is balanced.

Instructions

    1

Turn your flash off. The flash has a tendency to overexpose your subject and distort colors, but as long as she's effectively lighted, you shouldn't need to use it. Instead, take advantage of the fact that fluorescent lighting often appears brighter than other photography lighting.

    2

Automatically adjust the white balance setting on your camera. While many cameras have different wording for white balance settings, you'll be looking to set the camera to "indoor" or "fluorescent."

    3

Attach a fluorescent (FL) filter to your lens if you have one. While this filter isn't necessary, it is used to correct the green tone of fluorescent lighting and can improve your color balance. The downside is that these filters can be expensive.

    4

Manually white balance your camera by focusing on a blank, white sheet of paper. This "tells" your camera what white is and helps it to adjust the color tones of your portrait.

    5

Focus on the subject of your portrait and shoot.
