Snap Art vs. Photo Tools

Snap Art vs. Photo Tools

Both Snap Art and Photo Tools software modify digital photographs with effects that range from simply improving the quality of the original photo to transforming the digital image into what looks like a handcrafted piece of art. Initially targeted at the professional photographer, these programs are now available to everyone. Both programs encourage experimentation with a variety of filters and effects.

Similarities

Snap Art and Photo Tools both work in conjunction with Adobe's Photoshop photo-editing software. Both offer greater variety and control of filters, effects and presets such as brush strokes, canvas texture and light quality. You can create and save presets or scriptable actions, layer multiple effects in a chosen order and use timesaving keyboard shortcuts in both programs. Both take up about the same amount of space on your hard drive, encourage full program software downloads for a trial period and offer discounts or free downloadable plug-ins.

Differences

Snap Art installs as a menu option under the Filters tab and offers 10 filters, as of June 2011. Selecting a filter opens a new dialog box that displays the customizable options for that filter and a split preview of your photo. The preview splits the photo in one of eight different directions but always compares one half of your photo to the other half. Snap Art saves the completed work from each filter as a new layer in Photoshop. Photo Tools launches from the Automate option under the File tab, opens as a complete overlay to the Photoshop workspace and offers substantially more filters, effects, presets, selection and control. Photo Tools filters, effects and presets all open inside the Photo Tools overlay, so switching between effects and previewing is faster. Photo Tools saves changes in a "stack." Photo Tools adds each effect to the stack as layers in Photoshop. Photo Tools then flattens the stack and saves it to a single Photoshop layer. Once you have saved effects to a Photoshop layer, you have to relaunch Photo Tools to edit individual effects within the stack.

Workflow

Snap Art's single preview pane is helpful if your content is symmetrical in any direction. Photo Tools offers two preview panes. The larger shows a side-by-side comparison of before and after views and customizes to show alternate views. The "after" pane renders only after you apply an effect. The second, smaller pane previews a chosen effect on a sample stock photo. Photo Tools' workspace allows a full-screen preview, which slows rendering time. Snap Art saves each effect as a layer in Photoshop. The resulting file size is much larger, but it preserves the ability to edit easily inside Photoshop.

Batch Processing

Photo Tools includes a batch-processing dialog box. Snap Art copies the source layer from one photo to another photo for batch processing. Automating this process is slower and requires a level of comfort with automating actions in Photoshop.

Support

Snap Art offers three types of support: a limited number of articles and manuals available on its website; YouTube video tutorials; and a support request function available weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time. Photo Tools offers a wider variety of customer support: a large online database of support content; an online "university" of video instruction and webinars; links to heavy user and partner blogs; and email support weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific time. Photo Tools also partners with the National Association of Photoshop Professionals, which provides educational support and content for the program.

Extensions

Photo Tools works with Adobe Lightroom and Apple Aperture software and can process video clips shorter than one minute. As of June 2011, Snap Tools does not offer these compatibilities or capability.

Conclusions

If you are looking for an easy-to-learn, less expensive way to experiment with different looks for your photography, try Snap Art. To go deeper, have greater control over your chosen effects and be able to adopt the look of today's top photo pros, take on the steeper learning curve and higher price of Photo Tools.
