Background Ideas for Photos of Newborns

Background Ideas for Photos of Newborns

Take artistic photographs of newborns using backgrounds that compliment the picture but do not detract from the baby. Photographing babies is a rewarding experience but getting good shots of newborns is challenging. Newborns are unable to hold their heads up so most shots will be with the baby either laying down or held up by a parent or other family member. Use these scenarios to your advantage when deciding on appropriate backgrounds.

Walls and Screens

Let the walls of the room become the background of the photograph. Solid colors are best for newborn pictures, so avoid taking photos in a room with wallpaper. In the studio, choose screens with subtle patterns and solid colors, using soft focus to detract from background and have the newborn be the main focal point. When photographing in the home, choose a room with a solid-colored wall that does not have a lot of wall decor.

Nursery

Take advantage of the natural backgrounds in the baby's nursery. Place the newborn in the crib and get a shot of her cuddled with her blanket and a plush toy while creating a background with the rails of the crib through varied angles. Other background possibilities in the nursery include a window with either closed curtains or opened up with a view of the garden or yard. By taking a photo near a window, you are getting a scenic background with the benefit of natural light. Many newborn shots will involve parent's cooperation in holding the newborn on her shoulder or in a swaddled position; the nursery is a great place to get these shots.

Props

Due to their size, place newborns on top of or inside objects for interesting and creative photographs. Place the baby inside a large basket with a cotton liner or on top of a decorative pillow. Shoot this photo from above the baby so the props create an automatic background. Another option is to place the pillow on a favorite sofa in the living room and have that sofa become a background. Blankets and other fabrics are appropriate to use as backgrounds; drape them over furniture or wrap the baby in the blanket for a close-up shot.

Black and White

Black and white photos are common for newborns and provide the family with a more artistic picture. The backgrounds for black and white photos will vary depending on the style you are going for. To get a simple and subtle photo, any solid color wall, sheet or blanket will work as the colors in the background will not be seen. To add your creativity, choose to use windows, furniture or interesting decor items in the home as backgrounds.

Outdoors

Go outdoors with the newborn to make use of the natural light and create more nature-inspired backgrounds. The backgrounds you will use are the sky, grass, trees, flower gardens and even patio furniture. Have a parent hold up the baby into the sky and get an angled shot of her. Another way the parent or family member will help is by holding the newborn in a sleeping position in the crook of her arm or on her shoulder. Stage these photographs in front of the family's rose garden or an interesting tree. Lay the baby on a blanket in the grass and take a shot from above.
