How to Build a Photo Tent

A photo tent is a tool that provides diffused lighting around a subject. Manufacturers make them from many different materials, including fabric tents that pop up when taken out of a bag and plastic frames that are assembled and draped with fabric. The easiest photo tent to build is made from a cardboard box and fabric. You can make a photo tent in less than an hour for under $10. It performs as well as photo tents priced over $100.

Instructions

    1

Tape the bottom of a square box closed. The size of the box depends on the size of your subject. For small product photography, a square one-foot box works best. For larger subjects, use a larger box.

    2

Cut windows into three of the box's sides. Leave one to two inches of cardboard around the outside of the window.

    3

Tape white fabric or tracing paper over the three windows. The white fabric diffuses the light coming into the tent; this provides an even light source for illuminating your subject.

    4

Lay the box down on the side without a window. Cut the top and bottom flaps of the open side off. The two side flaps block light from entering your lens and creating flare.

    5

Tape a piece of white or black poster board into the box. Run the poster board from the bottom of the front of the box to the top of the back of the box. The poster board should start out flat---providing a surface to place the subject---and then gradually curve near the back of the box. The poster board provides a seamless bottom-to-background look.

    6

Set your light source off to one side of the tent. The light will illuminate the subject by penetrating the fabric on that side. The fabric on the other sides will bounce the light back to the subject and lighten the shadows.

The Kinds of Developer for Art Film Paper

Selecting a paper developer is an important decision, as each developer produces different results. Whether it's a resin-coated or fibre-based paper, the right developer can influence the tone and feel of a finished print. The type of paper and developer have as much influence in the final image as the image that was photographed, how it was photographed and how it was printed.

Neutral Developers

Neutral Developers produce a wide range of tones in a photographic print and exhibit little or no influence in the tones' temperatures. The blacks will be a true black and the whites will be pure white.

Examples of neutral developers are Ilford's Multigrade developer and Kodak's Dektol developer.

Cool Tone Developers

As the name implies, these developers produce cool tones in the final print. The blacks and grays will exhibit a light blue color. This type of developer is ideal for imparting a cold feeling in viewers of the print and enhancing images of snow or cold settings. Cool tone developers are not popular among most photographers as a neutral or warm tone is favored.

Kodak's Dektol is an example of a cool or cold tone developer and will enhance the chilly tones of papers known for naturally producing cooler tones. Polymax-T is another Kodak product that produces cooler tones.

Warm Tone Developers

Warm tone developers impart a reddish-brown hue to blacks and grays in the final print. Strong warm tone developers create a sepia-like tone while others add only a hint of warmth to an image.

Ilford's Bromophen is an example of a warm tone paper developer.

Lower Contrast Developers

Lower contrast developers like Kodak's Selectol-Soft reduce the contrast in a print. This is useful in producing a wide range of gray tones in an image that exhibits high contrasts of only black and white. Many snow scenes produce high contrast prints with little detail, but by using a low contrast developer a photographer captures more detail by producing wide tonal range in the print.

Care of 100% Cotton Muslin Backdrops

Care of 100% Cotton Muslin Backdrops

At most photography studios, you will find a wide array of backgrounds and backdrops to choose from. Some backdrops are made out of seamless paper, while others are made from 100 percent cotton muslin. Muslin is more expensive then paper, but it provides unique and interesting textures that make for a more realistic background. Backdrops made from all-cotton muslin need special care to prolong their lives.

Cleaning

Most 100 percent cotton muslin backdrops are machine washable. Check with the manufacturer before cleaning just to be sure. Washing your backdrop should be done only when it is absolutely necessary, since cotton can become worn out by multiple washings. Never wash the muslin backdrop with any other items. Wash your cotton muslin backdrop with mild detergent in cold water on the gentle cycle. If your backdrop is not machine washable, you will need to perform spot treatments to clean it. Use a soft scrub brush and scrub the area with warm water and just a little laundry detergent. It is best to allow the backdrop to air dry to prevent any shrinking. No matter what method of cleaning, always air dry your backdrop.

Storage

Always store your backdrop in a dry place. Storing in a damp area will cause mildew and mold to grow on it. It is best to not fold it but rather scrunch the muslin loosely. This will prevent patterned creases and folds that would have to be smoothed out before use. Scrunching the muslin will create random wrinkles that will add dimension to your backdrop if you decide to leave them. If not, the loose wrinkles will fall out easily with a light shake of the fabric.

Dust, Hair and Lint

Muslin backdrops are bound to get dust, hair and lint on them. You can simply shake your muslin to try to remove the debris, or you can use a lint roller. Lint rollers work perfectly to remove those pesky hairs and lint. You can find lint rollers at most department stores for a few dollars.

What Is Image Editing Software?

What Is Image Editing Software?

With the popularity of digital cameras, millions of people are now putting their photos on their computers and the Internet. Image editing software, which ranges from simple programs that come pre-installed on personal computers to more advanced professional products, allows users to modify their images in a variety of ways.

Popular Brands

Image editing software is available from a variety of sources. Most computer manufacturers include an image editing program, either as part of their basic software bundle or as an optional program. This includes programs like Microsoft Paint, Apple iPhoto and Hewlett Packard Image Zone. Beyond the basics offered by these applications, many printers or digital cameras also come with imaging software, such as Nikon Capture and Kodak EasyShare.

More advanced professional tools are also available from third-party program designers. The most well known of these is Adobe's Creative Suite, which is a continuously updated package of digital image editing programs that includes Adobe Photoshop.

Basic Functions

All image editing software contains some of the same basic tools. Besides being able to import a variety of file types, these editing features include resizing and cropping images. Basic tools also include the ability to manipulate a photograph's color (such as removing red eye), to render it in black and white, and to reverse or flip the image. Such basic functions are useful for touching up or reframing photos. Resizing an image can be useful in creating images that have a smaller file size and, therefore, take up less space on a computer's hard drive.

Advanced Functions

More complex image editing programs contain additional tools that perform more complex tasks. Altering a photo's color balance, manipulating its contrast (the difference between the darkest and lightest areas in the image) and changing the brightness can all be done easily in programs that are so equipped. Some programs also feature a set of pre-installed filters that allow users to soften, sharpen or otherwise change the overall appearance of an image. Other filters give photos a stylized look and produce new images that may bear little in common with their source image.

Storage and Organization

Image editing software can also help users store and organize their photo collection more efficiently. Renaming files and placing them in folders is just the beginning. Images can be given tags, such as the names of the people in each photo, to enable easier searching in the future. Programs such as Apple's iPhoto use face recognition software to find an individual person and label all of the photos that they appear in. Image editing programs also offer a variety of ways to view large collections of files, such as lists, grids or thumbnail views.

File Types

Finally, image editing software is useful for importing a digital image and then exporting it as a different file type. This can be done to produce images in the proper format for uploading to the Web, or to make them compatible with further image editing programs that may not support all common file types. In addition, file types such as JPEG, PDF, GIF, BMP and TIFF all use a different way or organizing the information in the image, with each taking up a different amount of hard drive space.
