How to Use Aperture Priority Mode

The aperture is the camera's equivalent to the human eye and controls how much light enters through the camera lens. The aperture is set in increments known as F-stops. Controlling the camera's aperture functions greatly increases the photographer's ability to create interesting photographs.

Instructions

    1

Locate the area on the camera that allows the user to choose the specific camera functions. This is commonly a dial on the top of the camera. Read the camera's owner's manual to locate this feature on a specific model of camera.

    2

Turn the dial to the area that indicates Aperture Priority. Many cameras have an abbreviation on the dial that resembles Av or AvP. Choose this option to control the camera's aperture.

    3

Look at the subject carefully and consider the background of each scene. A wide aperture will throw the background out of focus and a smaller aperture brings things back into focus.

    4

Experiment with differing sizes of aperture. Choose one subject and focus the camera on it. Mount the camera on a tripod and take the picture. Adjust the F-stop one increment lower or higher, recompose the same shot and take the picture. This allows the photographer a range of pictures showing differing apertures.

How to Develop Film at Home

Black and white photography is making a comeback. After years of exploding color, there is something now considered new yet "classic" about a crisp black and white portrait. It can be considered a piece of artwork for the wall. With the resurgence in this type of photography, it is highly likely that more people will--once again--turn toward developing their own film at home. It isnt difficult. It doesnt take a lot of equipment or space. All it takes is a dark room, the right tools and a bit of patience.

Instructions

    1

Pop the top off a container of exposed roll of black and white film inside a totally dark room. Roll the film onto the film reel. This reel comes with the film tank. Be sure that the holes in the film connect within the teeth of the film reel. Once in place, slowly and carefully advance the film onto the reel until all of it is properly connected.

    2

Put the film reel into the development tank, lining up the hole in the center of the reel with the spool in the center of the tank. Note: The tube is often removable from the tank so that it can be taken out. Slide it into the center of the reel before being put into the tank. Place the lid onto the film development tank.

    3

Turn the rooms light on. Move into another lit room after the film is safely and securely locked within the tank.

    4

Mix the developing chemicals--developer, stop bath, clearing agent, and fixer--according to the instructions given for chemical type and the brand of chemical purchased. Be sure to meet any and all required temperature settings before using the chemical.

    5

Pour the appropriately measured amount of film developer into the development tank. Make sure it is at the appropriate temperature.

    6

Move the tank backwards and forwards. Move the tank up and down and around in a washing machine agitation motion. It is essential to get film developer on each and every frame of the film inside the tank. Follow the manufacturers instructions with regard to the amount of time to leave the film in the developer. This will vary based on the type of film being developed. This will also vary based on the chemicals being used and the temperature of the product.

    7

Repeat Step 6 above with the films stop bath and fixer.

    8

Pour out the film developer when the time is up. If the product chosen is reusable, pour it into a bottle that is appropriate for storage of that type of chemical. If it must be disposed of, do that according to your states hazardous materials regulations (which can be found out through the state OSHA office). See the link in our Resources section to find the OSHA official website for your area.

    9

Rinse the film for the amount of time recommended by manufacturer instructions. Do this while it is still inside the closed development tank.

    10

Open the development tank. Take out the film reel. Remove the film from the reel and place in a sink or container of clearing agent. This rinses off any remaining residue.

    11

Squeegee the film to remove any excess water, Hang the film up to dry.

    12

Cut dried film into strips of six photos per strip. Now it is ready to use to make photographs.

How to Build a Pinhole Camera

Pinhole cameras are one of the simplest kinds of cameras. They direct an image onto light-sensitive film or photo paper without any of the lenses of a traditional camera. Since pinhole cameras can teach you some of the basics of photography, making one is a great introduction for kids and adults alike. You can make one fairly easily with a few things around the house, too.

Instructions

    1

Empty your cylindrical oatmeal box, and dust it out to make sure the box is clean. An oatmeal box is ideal because of its tightly fitting lid, but if one is not available, any box with a tight-fitting lid can be used.

    2

Spray paint the inside and outside of your box and the lid with black spray paint. Let the paint dry overnight.

    3

Cut a small hole about 3 inches from the bottom of the oatmeal box, using a pin or an X-Acto knife.

    4

Cut a small square of black card stock about 3 by 3 inches in size. Tape it to the front of the pinhole you created in Step 3. This will serve as the camera's shutter. Make sure to tape the card stock on all sides but lightly enough to allow it to be lifted and placed back with ease.

    5

Tape any place where light could potentially enter the canister, including around the lid area. Keep all taping light enough to be removed.

    6

Insert a piece of 5-by-7 inch photo paper into your new pinhole camera by opening the top of your canister and sliding the piece of photo paper inside, emulsion side out. You will need to do this in a pitch black room or darkroom to avoid ruining the paper. The paper should sit parallel to your viewfinder. You will need to take the paper out each time you wish to take another picture.

    7

Take your new pinhole camera outside, point it toward your subject and open the shutter. Since there is no viewfinder in the camera, you will have to point to the general direction of the subject you wish to shoot. See the Resources below for an idea of exposure times.

    8

Take your camera back inside, and in a dark room, remove the photo paper. See the Resources below for a better idea of how to develop your photo paper.

How to Remove Wrinkles in Adobe Photo Elements 2.0

While having a photo taken is a wonderful way to remember someone, sometimes a photo doesn't always capture a person as we really see them. Because of lighting and the fact that a photo freezes a moment, attention can be called to features that normally aren't as noticeable. One of these attention-grabbing features is wrinkles. Because of the nature of lighting in photos, sometimes wrinkles can be emphasized and you may wish to soften or remove them.

Instructions

    1

Acquire a digital photo. You can do this either by transferring from a digital camera or by scanning an image onto your computer. Open Adobe Photoshop Elements.

    2

    Select the clone tool.

    3

Set the opacity of the cloning tool to about 70 percent.

    4

Choose an area of skin on your subject that is smooth and free of wrinkles. Hold down the Ctrl key and click on this area to select it as your cloning point.

    5

Click on the wrinkles you want to repair. This will place a copy of the area you selected over the wrinkle.

    6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until the area you are working on is completely wrinkle free. It may take several clicks depending on the size of the area.

How to Make Photos Look Funny

How to Make Photos Look Funny

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but you can make it worth even more with some humorous touches. You can make photos look funny several ways. You can use the old-fashioned method of drawing on or altering a printed photo. You can also use photo enhancing computer programs, such as Photoshop or other photo editing tool. However you do it, you can turn a bland image into a whirlwind of laughter with a few simple tips.

Instructions

    1

Get magical with markers. Lay the printed photo in front of you and alter it with permanent markers. Press very lightly or the markers will not draw well on the picture's glossy finish. You can draw googly eyes or a hat on someone or put glasses on your pet dog.

    2

Use the old water and cotton swab trick. With the photo in front of you, dab the area you wish to alter with a damp sponge. Once the photo soaks a second, take a cotton swab and press lightly on the area you wish to obliterate. Be very precise with the cotton swab, as the water will make the photo finish very delicate. This is a good method to get rid of people's faces in photos so you can draw on alien heads.

    3

Stick 'em up. Adorn the printed photo with an array of stickers. You can put little ladybugs in someone's mouth or make your own stickers created with sticker paper or the leftover parts of mailing labels.

    4

Play with a scanned or digital photo in Photoshop. Photoshop is one of the best programs for doing practically anything you wish to make photos funny. By choosing one of the tools on the toolbar, you can do everything from using the paintbucket tool to color someone's face to using the paintbrush option to draw squiggles and other adornments. You can also play with the color and exposure and adjust the levels to see what you come up with. A family shot looks especially fun with a pea green tint.

    5

Alter the scanned or digital photo using whatever photo program your computer came with. Open your photo and choose the edit option. Then see what your choices are. Exposure, saturation, cropping and highlights are common options. Play with the different levels to see what you can create. You can also often open an image in a paint program, which will then allow you to use those tools to enhance your photo.
