Homemade Pinhole Cameras

Homemade Pinhole Cameras

A pinhole camera is simply a light-tight box with an open pinhole for a lens. You can make a pinhole camera with basic household goods. Youll also need to buy photo paper and chemicals for processing, but then you can enjoy taking and developing pictures completely on your own. Pinhole cameras make fun projects that will teach you a lot about how photography works.

Making the Pinhole Camera

You can use a shoebox, a photo paper box or a cylindrical oatmeal container for your pinhole camera. Cameras with a greater distance between the photo paper and the pinhole will have a longer focal length. A pinhole camera with a longer focal length, such as one made of a long cylindrical oatmeal box, will produce close-up images with less depth of field. In other words, less of the image will be in focus. Cameras with shorter focal lengths will have greater depth of field, but the images will appear smaller.

Whatever box you use, make sure it is light-tight. Paint the box black to prevent light from reflecting off its surface. Seal any openings in the box with black electrical tape. Cut a small hole in the box on one side, and tape aluminum foil over the hole with black electrical tape. Make a tiny pinhole in the aluminum foil with a needle.

Make a shutter with black electrical tape and attach it to the box above the aluminum foil. Tape one end of the shutter down at the top, and leave the rest movable so you can open and close the shutter. When you want the shutter to be closed, you can tape it down with small pieces of clear tape that can be easily lifted.

You should be able to open the box to load photographic paper, but make sure you tape it shut with black electrical tape once the paper is inside.

Taking Pictures

Use your pinhole camera to make exposures directly onto photographic paper rather than a negative. You can load photo paper into a pinhole camera much more easily than you can load negatives, and you can develop the images in your bathroom.

Make sure you have a light-tight room such as a windowless bathroom or closet to load the paper. You might need to stuff towels under the door to prevent any light from entering the room. In total darkness, trim a piece of photo paper so that it will fit into your pinhole camera, and tape it to the inside of the camera opposite the pinhole. Seal the box with black electrical tape before taking it into the light.

To take a picture, place the camera on a sturdy surface so that it will not move, and open the shutter. Pinhole cameras allow much less light to pass through the camera than a typical lens, so exposure times will have to be much longer. Depending on light conditions, you will probably need to keep the shutter open for at least 60 seconds. Experiment with different shutter speeds.

Developing Pictures

You can develop your pinhole camera pictures in your bathtub or home darkroom under a red or orange safe light. Buy print developer, stop bath and fixer from a photographic supply store and follow the directions on the bottles for mixing the chemicals. Youll need to dilute chemicals with some water. Prepare the chemicals in trays in a bathtub or long sink, and set up a separate tray for the water wash. Depending on whether you use RC paper or fiber paper, you'll have to leave the prints in each chemical for different amounts of time. RC paper is better for beginners because you can process it much more quickly.

How to Share Videos

How to Share Videos

Adobe Premiere Elements has convenient options that allow the user to send the video to devices, phones and web applications. The wizards are easy to use even for a novice user and make it possible to share videos in a variety of ways without leaving the application. You can create complete DVDS, export movies to phones and other devices and export movies for YouTube or to your own website via FTP. Follow the easy steps in this article to share your videos with friends, family and the world.

Instructions

    1
    Open Project

Open your project in Adobe Premiere Elements. This program is a memory hog, so if you have one gigabyte or less of memory it can take a while for the project to open. Remember to close all other applications before using Adobe Premiere Elements to free up computer resources. Once the project is open, click on SHARE

    2
    Share Menu

The share menu has a number of general options. We will look at each one separately except for TAPE. You need to have a DV TAPE recorder connected to the computer to use this option. Notice that you can share to a disk, computer, Internet or phone/player. You can burn to disk using Adobe's DVD templates to create a menu or chapter-driven DVD.

    3
    Disk Options

Let's look at disk options first. This is what you should use if you want to burn a disk to give to someone else. You can burn to a DVD or BLU-RAY disk. You can create a disk title and select quality options. Presets are based on options loaded with Adobe Premiere. You can change the options by choosing the ADVANCED menu.

    4
    Computer Options

If you want to create a video to watch on a computer or to share with another computer user, you should select the COMPUTER option. There are a variety of choices to make. You can create FLASH videos to use on a website. You can also create MPEG files and AVI files. These formats are useful for creating clips that you may want to use with other projects or to send to other people to use in their project development. Each choice gives you a variety of options to choose from as far as video and sound rendering.

    5
    Advanced Options

The advanced menu allows you to modify sound, video and multiplexer options for your videos. You can export to HD formats, phone formats, Ipod formats, PAL, NTSC and many others. You can also adjust audio and multiplexer formats to achieve the highest quality video output possible. Notice that each option will dramatically change the file size. Generally, the largest file will give you the best output rendering, but it may not be able to play on computers depending on the CODECS and video cards that are installed. For eHow, MPEG 3 movies with Dolby Digital sound seem to work the best.

    6
    Web Options

You can share movies directly on YouTube or publish them to your own website. To upload the video directly to YouTube, just click the NEXT button after selecting YouTube.

    7
    YouTube

If you do not have a YouTube account you can create a free account here or sign in to your YouTube account to upload your movie.

    8
    Website Options

If you have your own website you can choose "My Website" and fill in your server and port information. You must also specify the directory, file name and enter in your username and password. This will allow you to FTP your file directly from Adobe Premier to your website. This saves a lot of time and doesn't require any specialized software to send these large files directly to your site.

    9
    Mobile Options

Finally, you can share your video directly to a cell phone, Creative Zen or an iPod. Scroll down to find the correct mobile format, which will load the proper preset. You can then export your movie to your computer, which will be in the correct format for your output device.

How to Create Photo Templates

If you edit a lot of photos and find that you often want to do the same type of edits to them, you may wish to create photo templates. Photo templates can be made if you want to add a border to a photo, make photo collages, or crop photos to a specific size. Photo templates can make it quick and easy to add artistic touches to your photos.

Instructions

How to Create Photo Frame Templates

    1

Open a blank document in your photo-editing software. Your software should ask you what size you want your document to be.

    2

Set the size of the document (in inches) to the size you want the completed project to be. Some typical photo sizes are 4x5, 8x10, 11x14, and 16x20.

    3

Create a new layer. Leave the original layer blank.

    4

Choose the color you want your frame to be.

    5

Select the paint bucket tool. Fill the top layer with the color you choose.

    6

    Select the rectangular selection tool.

    7

Make a rectangle in the center of the template. The size of the rectangle will depend on how wide you want your frame to be. For a thinner frame, make a larger rectangle. For a thicker frame, make a smaller rectangle.

    8

Press the delete button. The area you just selected should now appear white.

    9

Paste a digital photo into your template and set it as the second layer (blank layer first, photo second, frame third). You should now be able to re-size and move the photo as you see until it looks the way you want in the frame.

    10

Save your new photo as a .jpg file.

How to Create a CollageTemplate

    11

    Open a blank document.

    12

Choose the size you want your template to be. Collage templates are often made in a larger size if you will be using a large number of photos.

    13

Create a new layer and leave the original layer blank.

    14

Select the color you want your template to be.

    15

Use the paint bucket tool to fill in the layer in the color you chose.

    16

    Select the rectangular selection tool.

    17

Make rectangular selections in all the places on your template you want to place photos.

    18

    Delete your selections.

    19

Paste the photos you want to use on the second layer of the template and move them around as necessary.

    20

Save your new collage as a .jpg file.

How to Create a Cropping Template

    21

    Open a blank document.

    22

Choose the size of the template you want to create (in inches). For example, if you want to crop all of your photos to 5x7 size, set the template to that size.

    23

Paste a photo into the template and re-size it until it is cropped the way you desire.

    24

Save your newly sized photo as a .jpg file.
