How to Cut a Mat for a Photo

How to Cut a Mat for a Photo

When displaying photographs around your home or office it is a good idea to frame the photo in a mat. This brings in focus to the image and gives it a more professional look. Although you can pay individuals at a local arts and craft store to mat the image this becomes rather expensive. However, with a few tools of your own it is possible to cut out a mat and frame the photograph.

Instructions

Determine the size of your mat

    1

Measure the size of your photograph. Standard image sizes include 4x6 or 5x7 (however, the exact size may vary so it is important to measure the image).

    2

Decide on the size of frame you want. It is easier to cut a mat to a frame rather than frame to a mat. If you cut your mat to a size that premade frames do not fit, it will cost extra to have a frame specially designed for the mat. If you have a 5x7 image, you may want to go with a 10x12 frame.

    3

Purchase a mat sized to your frame (so, if you bought a 10x12 frame, purchase a 10x12 mat).

    4

Subtract the size of the photograph from the size of the mat. If using a 5x7 picture with a 10x12 frame, subtract five from 10 and seven from 12. This equals five inches around, meaning you start off with a five-inch border.

    5

Add a quarter of an inch to each side of the mat (so the overall boarder is 5 1/4). You need the extra quarter inch around for a slight overlap on the photograph. Without the overlap the image will fall through the window cut in the mat.

Cut your mat

    6

Lay the mat down on a clean surface with the back of the mat (the side you don't see once in the frame) facing up. Mark off the determined border around the mat with your ruler and pencil (for this example, measure 5 1/4 from each side). After marking off the border you can see the completely marked off window.

    7

Cut out the center part of the mat with the mat cutter. A mat cutter has a ruler-like edge that holds down the mat board and the blade travels down the edge, over the marked line. Repeat this on all four sides, then pop out the cut window.

    8

Sand down the freshly cut edges of the window. This removes any rough edges from the mat.

    9

Position the photograph on the back of the mat (so you can see the image through the window), and tape down the edges of the picture so it stays.

    10

Insert the mat (with photograph attached) into the frame and hang where desired.

How to Colorize a Photographic Image

How to Colorize a Photographic Image

Image editing programs like GIMP or Photoshop allow you to colorize an image or a specific part of an image. Image editing programs allow you to make corrections to images that were impossible to make in the darkroom. Colorization is one of those things that could be performed in analog photography, but only with multiple masks and only by darkroom experts. With image editing programs it is relatively easy to make dramatic changes to images. It is always good to start with a goal to keep you from hacking the image too much and getting frustrated. I decided my goal with this image would be to make it look more prehistoric by changing the background. In this article I will provide some instruction on how to colorize an image and how to add elements from one photograph to another.

Instructions

    1
    Fuzzy Select

This is an image of a fake dinosaur near Palm Springs California. I never liked the background of the image. I could just adjust the brightness of contrast in the background, but I still don't think it would look prehistoric enough. The first step to change the background is to select the area I want to change. Using the MAGIC WAND tool or FUZZY SELECT tool click on the area of the photograph you want to select. In Photoshop, keep right-clicking on the area and ADD TO THE SELECTION until you have selected the entire background. It will be defined by a DOTTED LINE in both GIMP and Photoshop.

    2
    Adjust Hue

Adjust the sliders until you get the right color of the background. First adjust the HUE sliders until you get the kind of color you want. I thought a green hue was more prehistoric than a blue sky so I adjusted the hue until I got the shade of green I wanted.

    3
    Adjust Saturation

Next I adjusted the SATURATION and LIGHTNESS to get a paler version of the green hue. I wanted kind of green sky like you see in this image. The problem now was that I did what I thought would work and it is not very effective. Sure, the image looks more alien, but does it really look more prehistoric? I realized a simple colorization wouldn't work for me and I would need to do something more dramatic.

    4
    Copy From Image

Thinking about the image I realized it wasn't the color of the sky that only needed to change, but also the sky needed clouds. Prehistoric times make me think of jungles, and the desert sky just wasn't right. To correct this, I opened another picture with some sky and using the magic wand tool selected portions of the sky to copy. After making a selection, I just clicked COPY.

    5
    Scale Layer

After you have selected the portion of the sky and copied it, return to the original photograph and click PASTE. This will paste the copied image in to a new layer on top of the original image. Use the SCALE LAYER feature to enlarge and paste the layer over the original image. After placing the image DESELECT ALL to accept the changes. The placement works fine except for a couple of patches of desert sky.

    6
    Final Image

Using the AIRBRUSH tool and EYEDROPPER tool, select the area to the right of the powder blurt and airbrush the two desert sky areas to match the deeper blue sky of the pasted image. The final image works well with the deeper blue sky and clouds on the horizon; the image is greatly improved and looks more prehistoric which was my goal

How to Add Effects to Photos

How to Add Effects to Photos

In the days of digital photography, even the technologically challenged look for ways to beef up the point-and-shoot images they take of family and friends. Many who are into digital scrapbooking also like to edit their digital images to make them more appealing for page layouts. With the aid of a simple version of Adobe's Photoshop Elements, you can add filters and effects to your everyday photos that will give them the pizazz you desire without a lot of difficulty.

Instructions

Using Filter Effects

    1

Download virtualPhotographer from OptikVerve Labs (see the link below). This is a free plug-in for Photoshop Elements that provides you with a slew of filters to change the appearance of your digital images. The installation instructions for virtualPhotographer are available through the link provided.

    2

Install virtualPhotographer per the instructions provided. Open the image file you wish to edit in your version of Elements. Select the "Filter" tab in the task bar and then select OptikVerve Labs, followed by virtualPhotographer. These actions will open the virtualPhotographer window.

    3

Peruse the various filters available under the "Main" tab of virtualPhotographer, both in color and black and white (such as ambience, dream or glamor) to see what effect each has on your image in the preview box.

    4

Adjust the intensity of each filter under the "Style" tab. For a less-harsh effect, use the pull-down menu to change the filter from "soft" to "softer" or "softest." Each level provides a more-subtle effect on the original image. You can also use the scroll bar to customize the effect to your liking.

    5

Once you finish making the desired changes to the image, select "process" in the lower right corner of virtualPhotographer. The changes will now appear on the image in Photoshop Elements.

    6

Save the new image as a copy of the original. This gives you the opportunity to go back to the original images and make different changes if you change your mind.

Applying Overlays

    7

Visit a digital scrapbook supplies website (see the links below) and search for overlays. Overlays come in a variety of styles. Choose those that appeal to your personal tastes and download the files as instructed. Save the files just as you did for your images, but in a separate folder--possibly labeled "overlays."

    8

Open the overlay you want to try in Elements. With the overlay selected in your Photo Bin, click on "Select" in the task bar and choose "All." Then go to "Edit" in the task bar and select "Copy."

    9

Bring up the image you want to add the overlay effect to in Elements. Under "Edit" in the task bar, select "paste." The overlay should appear on top of the image you just opened. Using the mouse, drag the edges of the overlay until they cover the entire image you selected.

    10

Choose the overlay layer in the Palette Bin (to open, select Palette Bin in the lower right corner of Elements). Using the pull-down menu on the left (directly under the word "Layer"), select the various options to see what effect they have on the overlay and how they change the appearance of your image. Select the effect that provides the best results.

    11

Preserve the newly edited image as a copy of the original. This gives you the opportunity to go back to the original images and make different changes if you change your mind.

How to Change Black & White Pictures to Color

How to Change Black & White Pictures to Color

Black and white photographs have traditionally been colorized by a process of hand-coloring. This manual method by which dry pigments were painted onto film was a popular practice in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Hand-coloring fell out of favor with the introduction of color film in the 1950s, but it endured as a novel technique for reviving antiquated photographs. Today, graphics editing software like Adobe Photoshop offers an easy and convenient solution for colorizing black and white images. The application's layer and paintbrush features can be used to bring new life to these pictures.

Instructions

Change a Black & White Picture to Color

    1

Open your black and white image in Photoshop. This can be done in one of two ways. You can right-click on the image's icon in its saved location and select "Open with ... " then "Photoshop". Alternatively, you can open Photoshop, and open the saved image from the File menu.

    2

Add a new layer to your image. Go to the main menu and select "Layer" then "New" and "Layer."

    3

Name the layer according to which area of the image it will be colorizing. For instance, if you're going to begin by giving color to the backdrop of your image, label your first layer "backdrop."

    4

Change the blending mode of your new layer. In the layers palette, click on the drop-down menu and select "Color."

    5

Click on the brush tool in the toolbar and pick a color for your layer. You can adjust the shape, master diameter, and hardness of your brush stroke with drop-down menus at the top of the screen.

    6

Hold down the left button of the mouse to "paint" the area you're colorizing.

    7

Repeat Steps 2 through 6 to add color to other areas of your image. Don't be too concerned about coloring within the lines--all the layers can be cleaned up later.

    8

Click on your first layer. From the main menu, under "Image," choose "Adjustments" then "Hue/Saturation." Check the "Colorize" box in the Hue/Saturation window and modify each of the levels to fine-tune the color to its desired appearance.

    9

Repeat Step 8 for each of your layers.

    10

Fix any layers where the color needs to be cleaned up. Select a specific layer and click on the eraser tool on the toolbar. Move the tool over any places where the color has bled outside of the lines. Repeat as necessary on other layers.

    11

    Save your completed colorized image.
