How to Edit a Photo to Eliminate the Background & Keep the Foreground

How to Edit a Photo to Eliminate the Background & Keep the Foreground

Since the advent of computers, photo editing has become increasingly easier and faster. However, though many programs can expedite the editing process, anyone who is attempting to modify their photos should pay careful attention to light levels, pixilation and shadows when discarding the background in favor of the foreground. Depending on the sophistication of the software, the photos may look awkward when edited purely by computer.

Instructions

    1

Sit in a dark room without direct lighting. Direct lighting makes the computer screen hard to see. Launch Adobe Photoshop on a computer. Open the photo that will be edited using Photoshop by accessing the File menu, followed by the "Open" command.

    2

Identify the objects that make up the foreground of the photo. Select the "Magic Wand" tool from the Photoshop palette. Carefully outline the perimeter of the foreground with the magic wand tool. Once the entire perimeter has been outlined, the selected object will have a blinking line around it.

    3

Choose the "Select" menu option. Click on "Inverse." Everything that has not been selected will now have a blinking line around it. Hit the "delete" key. The background of the photo will erase.

How to Make Money With Photography

How to Make Money With Photography

Say cheese has been your favorite phrase forever, as youve loved taking photos since you were a kid. If all those years of practice have gotten you any good at it, you can turn your hobby into income and make money with photography. Dozens of venues exist for you to make money with photography, and a few simple steps will help you find several of them.

Instructions

    1

Create a portfolio. Youll want to have some of your best work at your fingertips when you are searching for work, so create both a hard copy portfolio in a stylish leather binder and an online portfolio. For the hard copy portfolio, print out or have duplicates made of some of your best work and simply place them in the binder to bring to perspective clients. For an online portfolio, you can set up your own website or use one of the free sites to display your work, such as MySpace, Facebook and other online sites. Some may charge you, but the exposure may be worth it.

    2

Print up some business cards. Having a photographer business card is an easy way to circulate your information while showing you really mean business. Include the address for your online portfolio as well as an email and phone number where people can reach you. Also include any specialties if you wish. You can go all out and have custom business cards made with one of your photos on them in the background behind the text.

    3

Get published. Contact magazines, journals, your local newspaper and other publications to inquire about their freelance photography guidelines. You can look up many sources online, where you can often find the guidelines for submitting photos, obtaining assignments or if they even use photographers other than those on staff. If you dont find the information, give the art director a call. Even if you dont get paid for your early published photos, it increases your exposure and adds more stock to your portfolio.

    4

Book some gigs. Weddings, birthday parties, retreats, anniversariesyou name it, you can photograph it for a fee. Use the best photos from these gigs to add more to your portfolio. Leave some business cards with caterers, florists and other businesses that also make money off such celebrations. Show the business owners your work so they know you can do a good job and feel OK about recommending you should the chance arise. Offer to photo some events for friends at no cost to build up some good stock photos.

    5

Sell photos at local art shows and street fairs. Make the photos into postcards, prints or framed and matted masterpieces, and line a booth with your work. You can have postcards printed at a local printer for a more professional quality.

    6

Put your pictures on merchandise. Create an online store at a set-up such as Cafepress.com where they print up merchandise on demand. You can use whatever image you want uploaded onto a variety of merchandise, ranging from T-shirts to bumper stickers, memory boxes to calendars.

    7

Run ads. Use free listing services online, such as Craigslist.com, or pay for a small ad in local publications advertising your photography business.

How to Sell Postcard Photographs

How to Sell Postcard Photographs

There are many ways to make a profit with photography. One way of earning money from your photographs is to license the images for use on postcards. If you are a photographer who has a large library of location photographs, postcard photography could be a lucrative path. To sell your photography for use on postcards, you must contact postcard publishers and request that they review your photographs.

Instructions

    1

Look at the text on the back of postcards that you like. The name and address of the postcards publisher is generally listed on the back of each card, according to Andrew Hudson's article "How Can I Sell My Photo As A Postcard?" featured on the Art Institute of Pittsburgh's website.

    2

Research additional postcard publishers online. Most postcard publishers, and all major publishers, have their own websites with general contact information and postcard samples.

    3

Visit the website of postcard publishers to which you are interested in selling your photographs. Not only will you be able to see samples of the postcards published by the publishers, but some publishers include their photo submission requirements on their websites. If submission requirements are listed on a website, follow the submission instructions exactly. An incorrect submission may be thrown away without response.

    4

Write a cover letter expressing your interest in submitting your photos for use on the postcards published by the company. The letter should differ for each company. For instance, create a separate letter for animal postcard publishers and location publishers, detailing your experience in the individual field.

    5

Send the cover letter to the company along with one or two samples of your work. If the company has an email address listed on their website or on the back of a postcard, it is appropriate to send your query in this manner, along with digital images of your photographs. If the company does not list an email address, send the letter with two quality prints of your images to the mailing address.

    6

Wait for a response from the publisher and send any additional information or prints that are requested. If the publisher is interested in your sample photographs, he will likely request additional samples of your work. Pick out several of your best photographs and forward them for review.

Good Poses for a Beach Photo Shoot

Good Poses for a Beach Photo Shoot

With a beach photo shoot, it is important to consider the person or people posing in the photos as well as the beach setting. The beach provides a natural, striking backdrop for photos. By making the most of the beach setting and making the people posing in the photos as relaxed as possible, you can achieve good results with a beach photo shoot.

Posing for a Beach Photo Shoot

It's natural to wear swimwear on the beach if you're comfortable with it. However, avoid overly revealing swimwear and provocative poses, unless you're a model posing for a professional photo shoot. T-shirts and shorts or even jeans can be comfortable and look fine for a beach photo shoot. For group shots, make sure no one is wearing an item that will overwhelm everything else in the photo. Natural poses with the subjects engaged in enjoyable activities are good for individual or group shots. It's also fine to arrange people in a photo, either standing or sitting,

Khaki and white are classic color choices for beach wear; however, blues and greens are also good colors to reflect the colors of the water. The most important consideration is to wear colors that are flattering to the subjects. It's also a nice touch to have everyone in the picture wearing coordinating colors. For toddlers still in diapers, be sure that they are wearing opaque coverings over the diapers.

Try not to be too fussy about having every detail perfect and every hair in place, especially with children. A natural appeal of the beach is the relaxed atmosphere. Even with photos for a special occasion, such as a wedding, the effects of gentle breezes blowing through the hair of the subjects often enhances the photos.

Use the backdrop of the beach to frame your photos. It's a natural to have shots of children making sand castles or teens and adults playing beach volleyball. A shot of someone partially buried in the sand can also add a sense of fun. The water and sand, cloud formations and other features such as cliffs or rocky shoreline can serve as a backdrop for beach photos, especially for individual poses.

The time of day can also make a difference in getting good shots for beach photo shoots. The best times to schedule a beach photo shoot are early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The sun won't shine right into your subject's eyes and cause them to squint at the camera. The light in early morning and late afternoon is also illuminates objects and people in a more flattering light than the sun at midday.
