Tips on Photographing Jewelry

Many people believe that product photography is easy--after all, you are not working with people or pets, and the product cannot talk back to you. However, taking pictures of inanimate objects is more difficult than it sounds. Photographing jewelry can be especially difficult, because you are contending with strange reflections, intricate details and generally expensive pieces that must be showcased beautifully. Taking your time to ensure every detail is perfect will result in excellent jewelry shots.

Watch Out for Glare

Jewelry can be especially finicky to photograph when it is silver, gold or another shiny metal. It reflects flashes and softboxes, and the glare can ruin a shot. To avoid glare, try angling the piece away from the softbox or flash. You may have to open up your aperture, but you will avoid catching the glare directly. It is fine to get a bit of a gleam on edges and sides, but it looks unprofessional to have it reflecting directly on the surface. Use natural light whenever possible, as it illuminates jewelry nicely, and you avoid the problems that come with using a flash. If you are shooting in a studio, try using a tripod and turning the modeling mode on for your lights. This technique will allow you to use a very slow shutter speed but still keep the camera steady.

How to Use Arcsoft Photo Studio 5.5

Arsoft Photo Studio 5.5 is an affordable and a relatively easy to use photo-editing software targeted for use by photo hobbyists and advanced amateurs. Unlike Adobe Photoshop, which is the industry standard for image editing, there is no steep learning curve required. It is loaded with features and has a friendly interface that can turn not-so-perfectly taken shots into amazing photographs.

Install Arcsoft Photo Studio 5.5 into your computer. Insert the installation CD into your hard drive and follow step-by-step instruction. The program can be bought for $74.99, but a 15 days trial version is also available online.

Open Arcsoft 5.5 Photo Studio from your program list. As a first time user, you will be asked to enter the activation code to start the software. You will have the option to select the user language: English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Japanese or Chinese.

Import a picture file. On the menu, click on "File" and then "Open" to choose the image you want to work on from your disk drive. You can also click on the "Thumbnails" button for easier selection of photos from your folder.

If the tools palette is not shown on the right side of the screen, click on "View" and then "Show Tools Palette". This palette contains the most commonly used actions for working on an image. Hover your mouse on the palette icons and a description will pop-out over each icon.

To crop an image, click on the "Rectangle Select" in the Tools palette. Make a rectangular selection on your image and then click "Crop" to finalize your cropping. You also have the option to make an ellipse, square or circle selection in the "Select" tool.

To improve the exposure or over-all look of your photo, click on "Enhance" on the menu to adjust brightness and contrast, hue and saturation and tone adjustments. Clicking on "Auto Adjust" is also a useful and quick way to do this. You always get a small preview of results before finalizing your choice of enhancement.

To remove facial blemishes on a close-up portrait, click on the "Clone" tool. You will have the option to select brush size and opacity. Press the "Shift" key on your keyboard and then click on the "clone source" or the area that you want to copy to cover up the blemish on your image. Repeat this process on all the blemishes you want to fix.

To add text to your photo click on "Text" on the tool palette. Click on the exact point where you want to position it. A tool option will pop-up where you will type your words. It will also give you options to set the font type, size, shadow and 3D effects.

To add effects to your photo, go to "Effects" on the menu. There are more than 40 selections offered in this drop-down menu, including old photo, motion blur, film grain and emboss. There are also sub-categories on the following additional effects: fine art, liquid, distort, create texture, lighting, framing and weathering. On each selection, there is a slider to set the intensity of the desired effect.

Save your edited image file. On the menu, click "Save As," type a file name, image type (photo studio file, jpeg, tif, bitmap, gif, or png, ) and quality. Type a file name different from the original file to have both original and edited image files on your computer.

How to Get a Release for Nude Photographs

Marketing your work can be one of the most gratifying aspects of your photography experience, but it can also be labor intensive. In nude photography it is especially important you have the appropriate permission from your models in the form of a model release that states how the photographs may be published.

A release is an agreement between a model and a photographer. The release can protect the photographer from claims of libel, slander, defamation, or invasion of privacy. It can also help avoid basic misunderstandings and give a comfort level to the use of a model's photos, especially in the case of nudes.

Make sure you choose a model release that is appropriate for nude photography. See links at the bottom for samples.

As part of agreeing to a shoot, make sure the model understands your intended use for the photos.

Have the model release ready after the shoot. Some photographers have the release signed before shooting, but I'm told this can put the legality of the release into question because the content of the shoot has not yet occurred at the time of signing, and therefor the model cannot take it into consideration.

Before presenting the release to the model, ask the model if she's signed model releases in the past. If she has not, explain to her that a release is a permission form that allows you to use the images in the way you described when you arranged the shoot with her.

Present the release to the model.

Let the model know that she needs to fill in all blanks unless they are marked as optional.

If she has questions do what you can to address them. It should rare that the model is not comfortable signing the release because permission to use the photos is something that should be discussed before the shoot.

Ask the model for government issued photo identification for proof of identity and age; make a digital copy of the id with your camera.

Pay the model after she has signed the release. The payment is in exchange for her time and permission to use the photographs for the agreed purposes.

. Some photographers have the release signed before shooting, but I'm told this can put the legality of the release into question because the content of the shoot has not yet occurred at the time of signing, and therefor the model cannot take it into consideration.

Before presenting the release to the model, ask the model if she's signed model releases in the past. If she has not, explain to her that a release is a permission form that allows you to use the images in the way you described when you arranged the shoot with her.

Present the release to the model.

Let the model know that she needs to fill in all blanks unless they are marked as optional.

If she has questions do what you can to address them. It should rare that the model is not comfortable signing the release because permission to use the photos is something that should be discussed before the shoot.

Ask the model for government issued photo identification for proof of identity and age; make a digital copy of the id with your camera.

Pay the model after she has signed the release. The payment is in exchange for her time and permission to use the photographs for the agreed purposes.
