Grants for Women Photographers

Grants for Women Photographers

Photography can be a highly deceptive art form, because the camera is thought to produce a like image, however, especially with digital media, it is quite easy to create something untrue out of a true image. Whatever your focus is in photography, something true or something tweaked, theres an organization that would like to help support you with a grant. Grants are a stepping stone in a photographers life. They can offer encouragement and validation for ones work as well as the financial freedom to focus on a particular project.

Women in Photography

Women in Photography is a project of the Humble Arts Foundation. Kodak also sponsors a $1,000 grant through Women in Photography for materials of the recipient's choice. There is a $20.00 application fee that covers both contests.

How to Create an HD Photograph

How to Create an HD Photograph

HD, or high definition photos, is a new file format that is a higher quality than the JPEG, GIF or PNG format the photo file was in on your computer previously. This HD Photo format offers better quality than JPEG, with usually half the file size, according to the Geekpedia website. In order to get this file format or have the ability to convert these other files to the HD Photo format, you will need to perform some downloads and convert existing photographs in a specific way.

Instructions

    1

Scan or upload your photo into the computer. This photo can be a snapshot that was taken decades ago or a photo you just took with a high-end digital camera. But by putting it on your computer through one of these methods, the photo will end up as a file in a JPEG, GIF or PNG format.

    2

Make sure you have Windows Vista 3.0 installed in order to have the ability to convert your photo files to HD photos. You can also install a program called .NET Framework 3.0. Once these are installed and operating, you can begin creating an HD Photo.

    3

Begin a new project in Visual Studio. Then add PresentationCore and WindowsBase as references in this window. These will both be .DLL files.

    4

Add two Using Statements to the Visual Studio Windows Project. These should be System.IO and System.Windows.Media.Imaging. A form will appear onscreen prompting you to add a button named "btnConvert," an openPicture button, and a saveWDP button. Double-click btnConvert. A dialogue will pop up and your photo will be converted to the HD Photo format.

Time-Lapse Technique for the Canon EOS Digital

Time-Lapse Technique for the Canon EOS Digital

The Canon EOS features a series of digital SLR (DSLR) cameras that range from dedicated still cameras to those that also offer video-capturing capability. The Canon EOS line of cameras is often used for professional imaging work. Because of the high-quality photos a Canon EOS model produces, it is a preferred camera for time-lapse shooting.

Time-Lapse Shooting

A time-lapse shoot requires taking a single photo of a consistently moving subject at specific time intervals. When the photos are played sequentially, it leads to a faster progression of events that happen in the subject. If you are shooting a time-lapse footage of the sunset, you can show the completed setting of the sun at a very fast pace. Your camera should be locked in one position and it should not move for the entire duration of the shoot. Depending on how fast or slow you want the time-lapse footage to be, you must set the time interval when you should take each photo of your subject. For instance, you can take a photo of the sunset every 10 or 20 seconds for a period of 30 minutes or one hour.

Canon EOS Utility

Every Canon EOS camera is packaged with an installation software containing the Canon EOS Utility. This is very beneficial when shooting time-lapse photography, as it allows you to conveniently name and organize your photos according to your preferred file name and sequence order. It also makes it possible to control your camera for shooting using your laptop, which allows you to take photos for your time-lapse without pressing the camera's "Shoot" button. This lessens the risk of accidentally moving your camera from its locked position, which can significantly affect the quality of your time-lapse footage.

Image Capture Options

Shooting a time-lapse is best done with the highest resolution image setting for your photos. Canon EOS cameras have the image-capture options "Small," "Medium," "Large" and "RAW." While RAW provides you with top-notch flexibility in terms of what you can do with your photos, it is generally recommendable to use the "Large" option for time-lapse photos because of the high resolution it provides and the fact that time-lapse photos are not meant to be edited one-by-one --- which is the main advantage of using the RAW format. A few minutes worth of time-lapse footage can already use thousands or even tens of thousands of photos. This makes it impractical to have each photo edited.

Aside from the additional processing time required, RAW photos need a significantly larger disk space compared to JPG image files. This may result in a lack of memory card space when shooting long time-lapse shots.

Intervalometer

An external device called an intervalometer attached to your EOS camera allows you to conveniently set the time interval for your time-lapse shots. This tells your camera when and how often to take each photo of your subject. For instance, you can tell the camera to take a photo over a five-hour period, a whole day or even a few days with time interval of a few seconds, a few minutes or a few hours for each shot. This makes it possible for you to leave your camera during the shoot, especially if you are shooting a time-lapse footage for a very long period of time.

How to Use the Speedlite Flash on a Canon

Canon's basic SLR camers typically come with a small flash at the top of the camera. However, some professional Canon cameras do not. For those cameras that do not have flash cameras, or for users who want something more powerful than the little built-in flash in their camera, Canon also makes Speedlite flashes that provide superior flash quality.

Instructions

    1

Affix the Speedlite Flash to the Canon SLR camera by sliding it onto the hotshoe at the top of the camera.

    2

Set the SLR to the mode of your choice using the rotary dial at the right of your camera.

    3

Aim the Flash according to the way you want the picture taken by pressing the button on the side of the Flash. Ideally, you want the flash not directly aimed at the photo subject, but still able to light a room up if need be.

    4

Aim the camera and take pictures as you normally would. The flash syncs with your camera to fire when needed.

How to Print Black & White Digital Pictures

How to Print Black & White Digital Pictures

Black and white photography is a very popular art form. By presenting images in black and white, the photographer removes any distractions that may be caused by color and focuses the viewer's attention on the subject matter. Printing quality black and white photos is a bit more complicated than simply placing paper into your printer and selecting the "Black and White" option. The proper tools and materials are needed to create superior prints.

Instructions

    1

Purchase a photo printer that uses monochrome inks. Monochrome printers use cartridges with several shades of gray along with solid black. These are able to provide a rich tonal quality to black and white prints with no hints of color showing through -- a risk when printing on a color printer.

    2

Load color photos that you want to convert to black and white into a photo editing program.

    3

Switch the photos from color to grayscale. This can typically be done in an Image Mode menu. Don't convert the photo into black and white mode as the subtle tonal variations will be lost.

    4

Save the photos at the highest image quality that you can.

    5

Load high quality photo paper into the printer. The choice of glossy or matte is up to you; both finishes can produce quality black and white prints.

    6

Print the photos on the highest quality settings possible. Most printers offer options ranging from Draft, Good, Better and Best. If these photos are to be displayed, there's really no question which option you should choose. With your photo open, go to "File" and select "Print." In the Printer Dialog box that opens, select the quality options as well as the type of paper you are using -- in this case photo paper -- and the number of copies to print. Click "Print."
