How to Edit, Add Effects to Pictures

How to Edit, Add Effects to Pictures

Digital cameras are very common. Often people want to edit their images or add special effects to turn a normal photo into something more artistic. Special effects and edits can completely transform a bad picture into one that you can be proud of. It is not difficult to learn how to edit and add effects to pictures and it is possible with any digital image.

Instructions

    1

Choose the image you would like to edit and add effects to. This photo does not have to be perfect, but it should be crisp and clear and have at least one interesting item in the photo, even if that item does not make up the majority of the picture.

    2

Find photo editing software. Such software is easily found and can range from being very simple to use with few editing tools to software that allows for more complex edits. Many printing websites have basic editing tools, and you can download free photo editing software if you do not have access to, or do not need, software that is more advanced.

    3
This image has been cropped to focus on the dragonfly.

Start with simple edits. Use the crop tool to focus in on the most important or alluring area of the image. The crop tool is usually a button in the shape of a box. Use the box to outline the area you would like to keep. Deletion of the area not within the boundaries of the box will occur.

    4
Many wedding pictures look just as good in black and white as in color.

Change a color photograph to black and white. Finding the black and white edit tool is possible in even the simplest of photo editing software. This tool will discard the color information in your photograph. The displayed image will be in varying tones of white, gray and black.

    5
Several filters were used to add softness and a glow to this image.

Use an advanced photo editing software program for more advanced edits. With an advanced photo editing software program, you can begin to use functions such as layers and filters to create works of art from your everyday images. Accentuate your photographs with filters that can help you create watercolor images, black and white images with touches of color, and images that look like stained glass. Use layers to take a section out of one image and place it in another photograph.

How to Make a Blurred Background When Taking a Photo

How to Make a Blurred Background When Taking a Photo

Blurring a photo's background when shooting applies the concept of "bokeh." This photography term refers to the aesthetic quality of a blur or an out-of-focus area in a photo. Creating this effect requires the use of a long or zoom lens set to shoot distinct foreground and background parts of the photo. The bokeh can provide an artistic composition in which the main subject placed on the foreground looks sharp, and its background looks intentionally blurred.

Instructions

    1

Set your main subject at a significant distance to your preferred background. The farther your main subject is to your background, the more blurred the background can be.

    2

Use a long or telephoto lens in your camera. You can also use a zoom lens for the process. These detachable lenses can be an option when using a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. This is a camera popularly used by professional photographers and hobbyists. If you're using a point-and-shoot camera, you can use the zoom function. However, using a consumer camera offers you limited options.

A long lens has an effect on the angle viewed in the image being shot. It makes your main subject in focus, and the background blurred. The longer the lens, the longer the distance from the camera to the subject should be. Otherwise, the subject will be too large in the frame. Also, the longer the lens, the greater the blurring of the background can be. For the zoom lens, set it to have a longer focal length, which in layman's terms would mean "zooming in."

    3

Configure the lens's aperture or opening to a larger setting. The aperture refers to the hole where the light that creates the image inside the camera passes through. When the aperture is larger, there is a shorter depth of field, and the background is more blurred. Changing the aperture is only available in DSLR cameras and select consumer cameras. In most point-and-shoot cameras, you have no control of the aperture, because the settings are set automatically.

    4

Focus on the specific element on your foreground that will serve as your photo's main subject. If you are using very long lenses, this can be quite tricky, because even a small difference in the distance of an element in your photo would result to a blur. For instance, if you use a 500-millimeter long lens to shoot a close-up of a face over a mountain background, the face, which is not a flat surface, would have some blurred parts. If you use this type of long lens, choose the specific part of the face on which you want to focus. Often, you can focus on the eyes, then the rest of the elements in the frame would have different degrees of blur. The farther the element is from the focused part, the more blur the non-focused element gets.

How Do I Digitally Sign My Photos?

How Do I Digitally Sign My Photos?

Watermarking images is useful for avoiding piracy and getting your name out, but digitally signing photos adds a more personal touch. Digitally signing your photography can be done with any photo editing program that is capable of working with multiple layers. Once you create a digital signature, you can use it on any of your images.

Instructions

    1

Write your signature on a neutral-colored sheet of paper with a black pen.

    2

Scan the signed sheet at a resolution of 300 dpi. Save the scanned file as a GIF, JPEG, TIFF file.

    3

Import the scanned signature image into a photo editing program like Photoshop, Gimp, Paint or Illustrator. Eliminate the background with the eraser tool so that the new image will only contain your signature over a transparent background. Darken the signature with the drawing tool if you feel it is necessary.

    4

Save the signature in the native file format and open an image that you would like to digitally sign.

    5

Drag the photo signature file into the layers palette of the image you are signing. Adjust the size and positioning of the signature until your preferences are met.

    6

Save the signed image file under a new name so that you have both the original and the signed image.

How to Run a Photography Studio

Being a photographer is being an orchestrator of one's memories and images. You are saving or enhancing a moment in time. Whether you are doing head shots, wedding photography or class pictures as your specialty, a photography studio is a place where one should always have a smile, professional demeanor and a sense of humor about all the quirks of the trade. Yes, babies will cry in the middle of a shoot. People will sneeze. Children will refuse to smile on class picture day.

Instructions

    1

Take a look at all the staff of the studio. Make sure that all people hired know what is expected in clear terms. it's dreadful to be reprimanded when a rule did not exist for the offense. It's best to establish early on what your expectations are. Even if you are taking over the management of an operating studio, be aware and clear on who you are and what you expect. You will find that you will be respected and accepted if you are clear, honest and up front.

    2

Be respectful. The golden rule is more than a necessity when running a photography studio. This applies to the photographers, staff and customers. Look at things from each person's perspective. You need to be careful so that others do not take advantage of this kindness, but it must be present to be successful.

    3

Keep all equipment clean, current and up-to-date. A photographer must always have back-ups on batteries, stands and reflectors. It's better to lose money on back-ups than to lose hundreds of dollars (and word of mouth advertisement).

    4

Jump in to do the hard work when it gets busy. Perhaps you think that cleaning a bathroom or following a photographer with a reflector is beneath you, but it's important that you do those things. Know all the terminology and ways of working within the studio. This is something one should be able to do in order to successfully run the studio. You must be a jack of all trades when it comes to picture taking.

    5

Do what it takes to make the customer happy within reason. Some people go to a business looking for trouble and to get something for nothing. This should be looked out for, but most generally want the experience to be a positive one. If something happens that mars the experience, listen to the concerns of the customer. Always ask your employee for his side if it is customer service-related. Do what it takes to repair the damage that has been done in the eyes of the customer.

    6

Be quick and careful if something terrible happens. Discovering that someone's wedding photographs have been destroyed would be a catastrophe. If something major happens that messes up a shoot--big or small--do more than issue a refund. Issue a huge apology in terms of free future services or other term of apology. Gift certificates may work. Go the extra mile to fix the problem. Customers that are unsatisfied tell many more people than those who are satisfied.

    7

Double check at two levels before each and every shoot. Make sure the photographer double checks. Do so as well. This goes a long way towards creating a great shoot.

    8

Have two types of cameras if possible. It can be a customer's choice for small shoots, but both should be used on major projects. This will help prevent complete catastrophes in the case of an error with film or digital development.
