How to Matte a Large Photograph

How to Matte a Large Photograph

Matting a photograph is done to help give a large photo a professional image. A matte will prevent the photograph from touching and possibly sticking to the glass, and offers a definite border around a photo. Matting a photograph yourself, rather than using a framing company, will save you money. Mattes can be found at most art supply stores already cut and sized to fit a standard picture frame. If your local art supply store does not carry mattes you can try a professional framing store, but you will spend more money.

Instructions

    1

Measure your photograph to determine the exact size. Make note of this measurement as you will need it while shopping for a matte.

    2

Speak with the framing department of your local art store. The professional there may be willing to give you advice on an appropriate color and decorative design that will work well with your photograph.

    3

Center your photograph on the backside of the matte. Apply a small piece of acid-free tape so you can check the positioning of the photograph. If the photo is centered in the frame add one or two more pieces of acid-free tape to keep the photograph from slipping. Although it is unlikely that it will slip you can never be too careful.

    4

Place the matted photograph in its frame. Be sure to remove any spacers inside the frame. Spacers normally come in the form of cardboard.
