Family Portrait Pose Ideas for 8

Family Portrait Pose Ideas for 8

Taking portraits of large families can be challenging. It's helpful to have your own ideas when working with a photographer in case he or she does not have experience working with large groups. By coming up with your own ideas and knowing how to pose the whole family, your portrait will be more than just smiling faces grouped together.

Props

The trick to using props with large groups is to hide the prop in the photograph. Position a large table in front of the family and sit one row of people behind it, resting their hands or arms on the table. Add another row of family members standing behind them. The photographer takes the image, with the bottom of the camera level with the table, which will hide the table.

Take it Outside

Make the outdoor elements part of your photograph by arranging the family on the ground or in lawn chairs, using flowers rocks or trees to create a colorful background. Alternatively, stand with the natural elements behind you and position the parents on either end. The parents anchor the children in the image, but still let the background shine through.

The Triangle

Create depth in the photograph by arranging your family in a triangular shape. Pose the father at the center of the image at the top point of the triangle. Arrange the kids in order of age, starting with the oldest and working down to the youngest, on either side of the father, leading toward the photographer. Angle everyone's body so that their shoulders lead and head turns toward the photographer.
