The style of a photograph can be dramatically altered by lighting. To create different looks you may manipulate lighting color, intensity and direction. You can easily create professional-style lighting by understanding basic lighting principles. Prior to setting up lighting equipment, determine the goal of the photographs to help create the best lighting style.
Butterfly Lighting
The butterfly lighting style is a classic lighting technique commonly used for portraits. To achieve this lighting style, place the main light directly in front of the subject's face. Raise the light so it points at a 45-degree angle down on the subject. This will cause a slight shadow to form under the nose and chin. This type of lighting style highlights cheek bones and is ideal for women with oval-shaped faces. Do not use this style to photograph men or women with short hair as the positioning of the light can cause strange highlights on the subject's ears.
Split Lighting
Split lighting styles highlight one side of the subject's face, creating shadows that run along the opposite side of the face. This can also be used on nonhuman subjects to create dramatic effects. To achieve this look, place the main light on either the left or right side of the subject. Position the light so it is 5 to 6 inches above the brow of the subject. If the light is too harsh, soften it by bouncing the light off a photography umbrella.
Soft Glow
To create a photograph with a glow around the subject, use photography umbrellas along with fill lights. To accomplish this lighting style, position the subject and place the main to the right of the subject. Lift the light so it is pointing down at the subject at a 45-degree angle. Place a dimmer light on the opposite side of the subject, and bounce this light off a photography umbrella. The light distributed by the umbrella is diffused to provide a soft glow on the subject. Select a light that is half as bright as the main light and place it directly behind the subject to separate the subject from the background. This light should be placed on the floor and pointed up toward the subject
