How to Set Preferences in GIMP

How to Set Preferences in GIMP

In my opinion, GIMP is the best free, open source photography program. It is very complex, offers much of the same functionality of the expensive and popular Adobe Photoshop and is essentially bulletproof in operation. I have been using GIMP for three years and it has never crashed or stalled. Since it is open source, however, it is fairly complex and offers a lot of customization options. It also means that some of the help and options are written in geek speak and requires some experimentation and dedication from the user. In this article I will discuss some of the basic settings and options that you can set in the GIMP preferences window.

Instructions

    1
    Environment

Open GIMP (keep in mind if you are running it on a Mac you will need to have X-11 installed). Once you have opened the program select PREFERENCES from the EDIT tab to open the preferences toolbox. Notice that there are 11 main adjustment tabs and a number of sub-tabs under some of the choices. Here I will only discuss the most important settings, but you should carefully review each tab and familiarize yourself with the options. I will not discuss devices since it will be different for each computer configuration. Think carefully about the number of UNDO levels you require and the size of the thumbnails. I prefer a large number of UNDO levels since I am not the greatest airbrush artist.

    2
    User Interface

Configure keyboard shortcuts, enable previews and adjust layer behavior with the USER INTERFACE tab. If you are familiar with Photoshop shortcut keys you can modify your GIMP keyboard shortcuts to emulate Photoshop shortcuts.

    3
    Display

Change factors controlling the GIMP display window with the DISPLAY tab. You can enter your monitor resolution manually and calibrate your monitor or let GIMP handle this automatically. If you are using a manual configuration it will change your monitor behavior, so be careful with the adjustment since it could impact the way other applications behave.

    4
    Appearance

Change the way the editing window appears and how it behaves with APPEARANCE, a sub-tab under image windows. You can apply templates and see the templates that are loaded under TEMPLATES. Notice you can have different selections based on FULL SCREEN or NORMAL modes. For example, in full screen mode you may choose not to have tool bars, scroll bars or status bars, so your view is unobstructed.

    5
    Color Management

Specify the rendering intents and profiles you want GIMP to use with COLOR MANAGEMENT. You can specify a monitor profile and a CMYK profile for your printer and specify the rendering intents for the screen, proof and printer. You can also specify which behavior you want GIMP to use when you open a file. If you are working mainly in a print environment you may want to change it from the default RGB color to CMYK color or LAB color. Most people will want to leave this in the default RGB mode.

    6
    Folders

Open the FOLDERS tab. You will notice a variety of specific folders and each one will offer options that you can check or uncheck. The folder pictured is for BRUSHES and it shows the different BRUSH options that are available. You can check or uncheck options to expand or limit your choices in the application. There are a lot of settings to change in GIMP and you need to be careful when making changes that will impact the image.
