How to Photograph the Beach

How to Photograph the Beach

No matter how you slice it--the beach is basically a boring place--sand and ocean is pretty much it. But don't get me wrong; we love it for basking in the sun, swimming, snorkeling and surfing. However, a great beach is really devoid of feature, or is it? In any case, taking pictures at the beach can be challenging. Sand and salt water are both deadly to the camera. The sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. is really too bright, and scenic views will have a lot of contrast. If you are patient, however, and it's the right time of day, you can get some great pictures. Read on for some techniques and then get your gear and head for the surf.

Instructions

    1
    Waikiki Beach

Get to the right beach. If you are looking for a deserted beach, don't go to Waikiki, Miami Beach or Atlantic City. This picture was taken at Waikiki at the "empty" part of the beach. Waikiki is as busy and dense as any beach I have ever visited. If you want to take pictures of people, surfers and other water sports, this is the place. These two in the picture were surfing on one long board, something I had never seen before.

    2
    Kaanapali Beach

Try using trees and foliage around the beach to frame the image and control the eye flow. The pictured image was taken about an hour before sundown and the trees frame the crescent of golden beach. This gives the beach a more secluded and private feeling, even though you can see people walking on the shore. Try using people, animals and plants to add depth and texture to beach photos.

    3

Some of the most beautiful beaches to photograph are not the golden strands of beach, but the more secluded rocky beaches and coves. Divers and snorkelers instead of sunbathers and surfers frequent these beaches. This little cove is on the west side of Maui about 12 miles north of Kapalua. It is near the Honokohau Bridge and in an area of Maui frequented by giant Sea Turtles (Hono). If you want to photograph deserted beaches head away from the beach parks and find your own stretch of privacy.

    4

Take enough pictures and you are bound to get a good one. Pictured is a great scenic beach view. The beach is relatively deserted, yet in the one picture you can see honeymooners walking, sunbathers, some snorkelers and an ocean swimmer. If it only had a bird in the sky, it would be perfect. If you are taking scenic pictures try using other elements to add to the scene to give the image dramatic tension. This may not be necessary if the lighting is very dramatic, but in most cases it will help you create a more complete record of the scene you are capturing.
