In times past, we relied on manual cameras to take colorful, bright pictures after having them developed. Today, we rely on mobile phones and digital cameras to snap our lives moment by moment. Digital photography has opened up a new world of transforming dull photos into brilliant, colorful masterpieces. While not everyone is a professional photographer, at times you may need to open the picture in a photo editing program and retouch it. This may include lightening, cropping, colorizing and removing red eyes.

Open the photo editing software on your computer. You can also use an online picture editing service such as Photoshop Express Editor or PhotoFlexer.
2Open the picture you would like to improve.
3Make basic adjustments to your photo. Crop the photo to display just the areas you want to appear and to eliminate undesirable areas (e.g., get rid of a thumb in the way of the camera). Resize the width and height of the photo to reduce file size and to make it compatible with email or mobile technology. Adjust exposure to make the picture lighter or darker. Eliminate red-eye, touch up scratches and blemishes, make focus sharper or softer and adjust colors (these steps are particularly useful when touching up faces).
4Make advanced adjustments to your picture. Adjust the hue and tint or make the photo black and white. Make the picture appear as a sketch or distort it. Add decorations such as graphics, conversation bubbles or frames. Other photo editing software programs such as Adobe Photoshop provide a wide range of additional options, including cartoon and canvas.
5Save the file. It will typically save as a .jpg.
