How to Use Script-Fu and Python-Fu for GIMP

How to Use Script-Fu and Python-Fu for GIMP

I have done programming, but am not a programmer nor knowledgeable about how to write scripts for GIMP. I am thankful, however, that there are so many programmers interested in image editing who know how to use Script-Fu and Perl to create so many neat add-ons for GIMP. Scripts are different than plug-ins and require no installation. In this article I will try to cover the basics of using Script-Fu and Python-Fu scripts to add to the functionality of gimp. If you would like to create your own scripts start by reading the GIMP manual and exploring the users groups.

Instructions

    1

Confirm that the downloaded SCM or PY files are in the correct directory. Exit GIMP before you start. The xxx .SCM or xxx, PY file needs to be placed in the SCRIPTS folders. This can be found at //user/application support/gimp. All scripts are stored in this folder. If they are not placed in this folder the application will not be able to find them. Once the files are in the directory, restart GIMP.

    2
    Script-Fu Tab

Script-Fu will create a tab on your toolbar where special effects types of scripts are stored. These are application tools that impact the image editing in the same way as a filter. Other downloaded scripts will be available in the appropriate drop down menu. For example, the Technicolor Script is stored under the COLORS tab.

    3
    Script-Fu Browser

Under the FILTERS menu you will find the SCRIPT-FU and PYTHON-FU browsers. This is where you can start the server and edit your own scripts. You can browse all the scripts, create your own and save them to files. Some scripts work better than others and some just don't work. Remember, these are written and supplied by other users.

    4
    Python-Fu Browser

The Python script browser and editor is located under the FILTERS menu. It operates in basically the same way as the Script-Fu editor and allows you to browse, apply, write and save your own scripts. These are powerful tools if you have the programming skill. If not, just download some scripts from the site linked in Resources below and try them out. If you don't like them, take them out of the folder and throw them in the trash.
