Photographing through translucents is tricky because they are sensitive to glare, shadows and reflections. Translucent surfaces distort photographic images and are difficult to adjust. If you are photographing through glass, you may remove the glass and eliminate the translucent; however, this is impractical for all translucent photography. Highly polished objects present similar problems, but you dont want to see finger prints, dust or smears on the objects you are photographing either. The best way to photograph translucent objects or through translucent covers is to construct a tent.

Choose a cardboard box that is large enough to fit the object you wish to photograph. Your object must fit inside the box with room to spare so that you dont get any strange shadows in the photograph.
2Tape the bottom of the box together so the box is open on top, but sealed on the bottom.
3Use spray adhesive to attach the white paper to the bottom of the box. Be sure the entire surface is covered with white paper.
4Cut large holes in the four sides of the box. You should leave about 2 inches of the box corners and edges on each side. Your holes should large square or rectangular holes. These holes will allow light to penetrate the box. You want the box to be sturdy but let in plenty of light. Reinforce the edges with packaging tape.
5Seal the top of the box with packaging tape.
6Use spray adhesive to cover the entire inside of the box with white paper. Spray the adhesive on and then cover the area with white paper. You want the inside of the box to be completely white. This will eliminate shadows and glare on your translucent.
7Attach your pillowcases or fabric around the edges of the box where you cut holes. Be sure that every hole is covered. Attach the fabric with clips or tape to the outside of the box all the way around.
8Cut a hole in the fabric that is the size of your camera lens. This covering will ensure that you do not get any reflections in the translucent surface.
9Add lights to each side of the box. Use lamps or photography lights and aim the light toward the tent. Adjust these lights until all the glare is gone and the translucent piece is focused, clear and free of distortion.
