How to Make a Foldable 8x10 Pinhole Camera

This pinhole camera takes the classic home-made camera and gives it a foldable portability and a zoom lens with different focal lengths. Pinhole cameras need to be loaded, unloaded and developed in a dark room with black-and-white photo chemicals. The pinhole camera itself is made with household materials.

Instructions

Making the Zoom Accordion

    Cut the cardboard into four sections. Two sections should be 7.5 inches wide, and two should be 9.5 inches wide. All four should be of equal lengths (about 10 to 11 inches). Set apart the top and bottom halves of the photo paper box. When held up vertically, one will be the front of your pinhole camera and one will be the back. The zoom will stretch between the two box halves.

    Use the knife to score parallel, horizontal lines about inch apart on each piece of cardboard. (You will score these lines along the 7 or 9.5 inch width, not the length.) Make as many scored lines as you need to fill each piece. Also, after you finish your first piece of cardboard, line it up with the second one so all the scored lines meet as closely as possible.

    Take the first two pieces of cardboard (one 7.5 inches wide, one 9.5 inches wide) and place them at a 90-degree angle to form a corner. Line up the scored marks so they meet. Glue a strip of black cloth vertically along the corner, leaving a tiny gap between the pieces of cardboard.

    Repeat this with the other pieces of cardboard until all four fit together in a square with black cloth at each seam. You should have a tall square 7.5 inches wide on one side and 9.5 inches wide on the other side. Make sure all the scored lines meet each other at the seams.

    Begin folding the zoom accordion into itself. Fold the first row of cardboard into the square on all sides. Then fold the second row back out away from the box. Continue alternating until the accordion is complete and can be folded into itself.

Making the Pinhole Camera

    Use the knife to cut a one-inch square window in the exact center of the 8x10 photo paper box lid.

    Paint both the lid and the bottom of the box black. Coat it well with paint inside and out.

    Use the needle to make a pinhole in the center on the aluminum square. The tip of the needle should barely go through the aluminum. The smaller and cleaner the hole, the cleaner and sharper your photos will be.

    Use black tape to secure the aluminum to the back of the one-inch window. The pinhole should be in the center of the window.

    Using the extra black cardboard, cut two strips each one inch wide. Leave one strip 12 inches long. Cut the second strip in half. Place each of the shorter strips vertically on either side of the window. Allow a two-inch gap in the center and glue either end securely.

    Slide the 12-inch strip through the gaps, so it slides easily back and forth to cover and uncover the pinhole window. This is your shutter. Always leave it closed unless making a photo.

    Place a thick line of glue (Super Glue or another strong glue is preferred) around the top row of the zoom accordion. Press it firmly into the lid. It should just fit with about a half-inch margin. Hold firmly until it will set itself.

Taking a Pinhole Photograph With Your Camera

    Load your pinhole camera in the darkroom. To load the pinhole camera, place a sheet of 8x10 photo paper into the bottom of the photo paper box. Use double-sided tape to secure it. The glossy, or emulsion, side should face out.

    To close your pinhole camera, fit the bottom of the accordion into the bottom of the photo box. Use black duct tape around the outside to secure the seam. Be sure no light can get in.

    Set the camera up on its shortest side. Make sure the shutter is covered.

    Place the camera in front of your subject. Daylight is best. Adjust your zoom by straightening or folding the zoom accordion. You may the lid of the second photo paper box to hold the pinhole camera secure. Use wood blocks or something similar between the front of the camera and the lid if any space is left.

    When you have the camera where you want it, carefully move the shutter to reveal the pinhole. Expose the photo paper about 30 seconds.

    Slide the shutter back to close it. Take the camera back to the darkroom to develop. You will need to cut the tape to open your camera and re-tape it each time you use it.

A Photography Technique for Portrait Light Setting in a Background

Portrait photography seems relatively straightforward, and it is, but there are numerous ways to improve the details of your portrait photos in order to set them apart from others. A very effective way to improve your portrait lighting is to graduate the background. Graduated backgrounds are defined by having a bright area, a darker area and a subtle transition between the two areas. The effect adds visual interest to your subjects and covers up any shadows caused by the key lights for your subject. This technique can be accomplished with an additional off-camera strobe flash and a grid spot.

    Set up your traditional portrait lighting with a key, fill and rim light. Place your subject in front of a simple backdrop.

    2

    Attach the grid spot to the flash head of the camera as well as the remote flash receiver. The grid spot will make the light that comes from the flash more direct so that you can have greater control over it.

    Set the flash in the lower area of the backdrop. Look at the key light of your portrait and predict where the shadow of it will be cast on the backdrop. Point the flash toward that shadow as a starting point.

    Take several exposures with the background light in the starting position. Experiment with the light in various positions until you reach your preferred effect.

How to Use a Macro Lens for a Portrait

Macro lenses give you the ability to zoom in closely on an object without having to worry about the focus. In most cases, when zooming in very closely on an object, the zoom makes it difficult for one to focus on an object. Macro lenses fix that problem, particularly when it comes to portraiture. Macro lenses allow you to move close to the person and, with a few extra steps, have clear, sharp close-ups of your subject.

    Choose a macro lens between 90mm and 105mm in length. These lens lengths will give you a better ratio for portrait photography.

    Get close to your subject. Your macro lens will have a 1:1 magnification, which means your lens will photograph things at its true size. For this reason, you won't be able to zoom in or out.

    Stabilize your lens on a tripod or surface. The closer you get to your object, the easier it is for you to get motion blur.

    Use a small aperture setting, such as f/16 or f/22. This will help control your depth of field. The smaller your setting, the more clarity you will get in your background.

What Are Personal Characteristics to Become a Photographer?

The art of photography is more than mere pointing and shooting. A successful photographer needs to have certain characteristics such as curiosity, technical savvy and a pleasant personality. The good news is that much of these characteristics can be learned through practice and preparation; you don't have to be born the next Ansel Adams.

Easy Going

    A photographer should have a knack for making his subjects feel relaxed and comfortable. This is especially true with modeling, school and wedding photography. Also, he should be able to blend in with his environment to the point where others barely notice his camera. For example, a photographer shooting a band shouldn't stir uncomfortable feelings in the band or audience; the subjects should feel natural.

Observant

    One key personal characteristic of a good photographer is that she is always aware and alert for good photo opportunities. Countless legendary photos have been either candid or stumbled upon by the photographer. A keen observation of events and how and why people will react is vital. Ideally, it's not a switch to be turned on or off; she's always on the clock, so to speak, looking for the next good shot.

Curious

    If good photo shots were always easy to spot, then there would be a significantly larger amount of excellent photographers working and the Pulitzer Prize's prestige would perhaps diminish in value. A key personal characteristic of a photographer is to have an unquenchable curiosity of the world around him. This is essential for spotting things that others may not see.

Tech Savvy

    An artistic eye and creative passion are both vital, but the fact remains that key personal characteristic of a photographer is to be able to work her equipment and get the most out of it. The camera and its functions, lighting equipment and possible manipulation of the photo afterwards---color to black and white, for instance---all need to be mastered. You don't want to have a great shot compromised by something as pedestrian as equipment ignorance.

How to Light an Interior for a Photo Shoot

There are several different ways to light an interior space for a photo shoot. Fortunately, a photographer does not always need expensive lighting equipment to create beautiful photographs. In fact, some photographers rely exclusively on the natural surrounding light of an interior space. On the other hand, inexpensive alternative lighting is also available. High-quality equipment can also be purchased from photography and camera stores. The key to creating a successful photograph in an interior space is to work with the natural lighting and supplement with lighting equipment.
