How to Sell Photography at Art Shows

You almost always have your camera with you and, by now, you've built up a collection of photographs, many of which are as good as--or better than--some of the photos you see for sale at art shows or fairs. Maybe it's time you tried selling some of your prints at an art show, too.

Instructions

Before the show

    Create your photography business. Contact your local chamber of commerce or U.S. Small Business Association office to learn what you'll need to obtain a vendor license and collect taxes.

    Visit art shows. Pay attention to what booths look like and how photographs are displayed. Find out which booths are busiest, what types of prints are people buying (its not always what you expect) and what is the range of prices and sizes of photos being sold? Keep notes about each show you visit.

    Apply to art shows. Understand that many shows require you to apply six months to a year in advance, so leave yourself plenty of time. Read the applications carefully. Fill them out completely and accurately.

    Decide which photographs you want to sell and in what sizes. Print them or have have printed. Matte and frame the photos yourself or hire someone to do this.

    Figure out your pricing, knowing that this may be differ from show to show. Check the notes you took when you were visiting art shows, and base your pricing accordingly. Charge slightly more than the mid-price for each size photo at each art show. For example, if, at the XYZ Art Show, the price range for 8x10 framed photos was $10-$400, the mid-price is $205. Set your price a little higher than that.

    Set up a merchant account so you can take credit cards. Check with your bank or other businesses that offer this service. Contact an artists association or conduct your own research to find out which option is best for you.

Your booth

    Decide what type of booth you want. Typically, art shows offer 10- by 10-feet spaces. Have an overhead cover, as in a tent canopy, if the show is outside as a way to quickly protect your art from rain and strong winds. Understand youll need walls on which to hang your photographs.

    Get a table with a table cloth that reaches the ground in front as this is where you'll conduct your transactions. Place your credit card macgine, business cards, postcards and tubs of small, unframed prints on the table. Store packing material and bags, your locked cash box, food and water under the table.

    Get a chair the height of a bar stool as this will keep you at a comfortable height for conversation, even while youre sitting. Stand to talk to your customers, whenever possible.

    Practice putting together your booth at home. Understand that this lowers stress when it comes time to set it up because youre already familiar with the process. Play with the photo displays to create a welcoming arrangement before the show starts.

At the show

    Get to the show as early as allowed to cut down on stress about setting up. Take advantage of the extra time if the show allows you to set up the day before. Accept, though, that few do.

    Be friendly and engaging. When people seem interested in a photograph, ask them what they like about it, where they see it hanging and other questions that get them imagining they own it.

    Have a receipt book and write a receipt for each transaction. Realize that your copies of the receipts are a record of which photos and sizes sold each day.

    Have a variety of sizes and prices. Postcard prints of your photographs can be priced fairly low, while you might price large, framed prints at several hundred dollars.

How to Set Up a Darkroom

When your photography hobby becomes something more than a hobby, youll need to set up a darkroom. Of course you can also build a darkroom if you only do your photography a few times a month, but would rather develop the film yourself instead of trusting it to a lab. Building your own darkroom is fairly easy as long as you use the right equipment. To get started, make sure you have everything youll need and pick a spot.

    Decide on a place where you want your darkroom to be or pick a location. Remember that the room must be dark and you need to have the doors and windows blacked out because even the slightest amount of light can ruin the development of your pictures.

    Purchase dark pieces of velvet fabric from your craft store or fabric store to hang over any windows and doors. This is an easy alternative to those expensive blackout shades sold in photography supply stores. As long as the fabric panels are as wide as your openings and long enough to reach the bottom of the opening, youll be all set.

    Set up a system for others in the area so they know where youre in your darkroom. An elaborate lighting system is one way, while others might prefer to hang a sign on the outside of the door that says do not enter or safe to enter.

    Design your wet area and dry area, making sure to leave enough space between the two areas so you can safely walk around without bumping into anything. In your wet side youll need pans for the developer, stop, fix and wash solutions. The dry side should contain your dryer, enlarger, timer and anything else you need.

    Hang one of your velvet fabric panels over the door leading into the darkroom. Youll want the fabric to easily move when you walk into the room, but still be able to push the fabric back in place to hide the light. You might find it helpful to hammer nails into the fabric to keep it in place.

How to Use an Auto Rokkor Lens

The Rokkor lens is available in styles ranging from 45 mm to 58 mm with f-stops between 1.2 and 2. Though the lenses are semi-automatic, you can still adjust the f-stop slightly as well as adjusting the shutter speed. The Rokkor lens can be used on a wide variety of cameras. Like most lenses, the more you use the Rokkor, the more you will understand how to take properly focused and lit pictures.

Instructions

    Place your camera on a table so that the lens faces upwards.

    2

    Grasp the lens currently on your camera. Unscrew it by turning it counterclockwise. Set the lens aside.

    3

    Place the Rokkor lens over the camera. Screw it into place by turning it clockwise.

    4

    Turn the camera on by holding the power button.

    5

    Look through the viewfinder or look at the digital view on the back of the camera.

    Point your camera at the item or person you wish to photograph. The Rokko lens should be at least 20 inches away from the subject for the proper focus. The item should be properly lit.

    Set the shutter speed, if possible. To find the perfect shutter speed, use a light meter. Hold the light meter over the subject and point it so that it faces your camera. The light meter should display a recommended shutter speed. Turn the lens so that it aligns with the appropriate shutter speed.

    Attach your camera to a tripod, if desired. A tripod keeps the camera steady so that your images do not blur. Typically, the Rokkor lens produces a sharp image so a tripod may not be necessary.

    Tap the shutter release to take a picture.

What Are Wide Angle Lenses Used For?

In the world of photography, any lens with a focal length of 40 mm or less is considered a wide-angle lens. The curvature of the lens incorporates a wider view of the surroundings than a standard lens, thus allowing the photographer to capture much more image area than a standard lens. These and other unique qualities can be applied to many different scenarios, making wide-angle lenses a favorite tool of the photographer.

Interiors and Tight Spaces

    More area is captured in the photograph than in a standard lens due to the wider angle of view; this makes it an ideal lens for shooting in tight areas like interiors where the photographer does not have much room to move around and needs to portray an overview of the space. By creating a visual expansion on all sides of the photo, a wide-angle lens helps to give the appearance of more space in the photo than there actually is.

Vistas, Landscapes and Architecture

    A wide-angle lens can fit a lot of information into a photo especially when the photo is not of one specific subject but many at once, like open vistas and landscapes. This is often much more information than the human eye could capture without turning one's head. This enables the photographer to find and illustrate the inter-relationships that the various elements in the photo have to one another. It also allows the photographer to capture a large primary subject as a whole, making wide-angle lenses ideal to photograph building exteriors and architecture, for example.

Exaggerated Perspective and Portraits

    Shooting with a wide-angle lens makes objects in the foreground seem much larger and objects in the background appear to be much smaller or farther away than they actually are. This difference in relative size makes the viewer instantly aware of the distinction of the primary subject of the photo as well as the lesser background elements, making the photograph easier to "read." When shooting candid photos, this exaggeration easily grants importance to the foreground subjects in their environments.

Creating Connection with the Subject

    Because of the exaggerated perspective that these lenses create, it is often preferable to get closer to subjects than you would with a "normal" lens. A wide-angle lens requires the photographer to become more of a part of the subject, and this closeness can instill trust between the photographer and subject. This trust can open up the photographer to more artistic possibilities for the photos, as the photographer's presence is known and accepted; this can help in creating dynamic candid portraiture where the subject is photographed among his or her surroundings.
